Just wondering if you or any one you know have practiced skills that aren't under your scope of practice under an RN because they know you're a nursing student and want to learn/practice? [obv not the right thing to do]

Like you said it's obviously not the right thing to do. However, when I was an RN at a nursing home, I allowed an LPN to hang an IV on her patient. It's not right, but I allowed it. Also I let a CNA give insulin to one of my patients. I HIGHLY recommend nobody do this. I did though ?

I worked at nursing home and LVN’s WANTED me to help them with the stuff they didn’t want to do such as wounds, colostomy bag changes, and scabies treatments. I always refused because I’m not getting paid to do it, there will be plenty of time to practice skills during clinicals under an experienced instructor and when you actually pass your NCLEX and are actually getting paid to do it.

An LVN I worked with allowed me to assist her and do a couple of things myself when I was a nursing assistant in LTC. More telling was the preceptor at clinical who told me she did not believe in my achool’s propensity to keep students from doing things. She pulled the curtain, showed me and supervised me doing tasks. Learned more from her than two or three of my instructors/classes combined. That same nurse advocated for me to be hired after graduation. I got more support from my short interaction with her than before or since. I have no criticism for nurses who train and supervise those students under them, in certain circumstances. Now if something goes terribly wrong I would think they should also take appropriate responsibility for their actions.
