This year as of January 1st is my 6 year mark as an aide, my question is what makes a good aide? I worked with a woman in her 50's and everyone even staff loved her and said she was a good aide, like they highly respected Her or asked for her input on things or came to her for things. How does one get that recognition, and what exactly makes a great aide, I work in long term care.

I believe a good aide is one who is devoted to taking care of someone else, with no complaints and always smiles. I have been a CNA for 6 years as well, and I know you have seen them aides, the ones that although they show up to work (maybe on time), they roll their eyes when a resident is "too slow", theyre on their phone in the hallways, I actually chose to go to home health unable to continue to work with people such as so. Not everyone is like that but they are out there. I will never forget getting hired on at my most recent job. I received great references from past employers and even had patients families call the agency to compliment me without my knowing. EVERY week when it was time to turn in my paperwork, I was told how many compliments I was receiving. I would hear it through my boss after being moved from patient to patient. After being on the job for a month, I didnt expect to have families call the office just to say what a good aide I was. I wasnt even sure what I did that was so great because I was just doing what I love to do. Im not sure why you would ask this question- I think you know what makes a good aide. Someone you can rely on. DOesnt complain. Doesnt play on phone. Focuses on their residents/patients needs. Goes above and beyond even if youre just making up their bed. ALWAYS SMILING!! That makes a great aide. And Im sure you too are influencing others and others are wondering what makes you as great as you are and you dont even know it :) God Bless
