  1. Hey everyone! So to give a little background info, I am 26 years old, taking my pre reqs here in TX at a local community college, and am gearing things towards my BSN. I currently work full time as a tech at a hospital, 3 shifts a week. Well, my question is, do nursing programs look at how many credit hours you take in a semester? The only reason I ask, is because right now I am taking 6 hours, and was thinking of increasing to 9 hours next semester, and then increasing course load again after that semester. I am a first time college student if it matters, I just didn't want to get in too much over my head the first semester and risk getting low marks. But aside from that, I was just curious if nursing programs would want to see a heavy course load on your transcripts, or if they just care that you had high marks completing the pre reqs. I am aware we have to take a HESI, which I am not worried about.
  2. So I just accepted a position as a tech on an IMCU (Intermediate Care Unit), I have been a CNA for 10 years, but never in this setting. Question to nurses and techs, what is this floor? What type of patients are there on this floor and what do the techs do in that particular speciality? I start school in July towards my R.N. and I am also curious as to if this particular floor would be great experience to see a lot of complex illnesses as well as getting submerged into the acute care culture. My goal is to become an ICU nurse one day, if that helps. For years I was used to nursing home work, pretty much basic cna duties, and I have been wanting to be able to do more , utilize skills more, as well as see more, so would this unit do justice in rounding all of that out? Thanks in advance!
  3. Not trying to sound mean, but I mean I don't have time to cram anything when I will be taking my test soon. I just need the answer to my question I posted please.
  4. I went through this, and there is a lot I need covered, so just cramming will not help me.
  5. Well thanks but.... I am going to take my test soon, and there is a lot of information I need covered, my last two years of high school I did not have to take math due to the fact that my co op class took care of it...... If someone can please just answer this it would be appreciated, that is why I posted the topic to get an idea of what might happen and how long I will be in school before I can see the nursing program. Thanks!
  6. So I recently have decided to go on an become an RN, I will be going for my associates degree. Now I read online that math competency is a requirement, I will be enrolling in Tarrant County Community College in Fort Worth. Well anyways it states on the website that I have to take a test to determine if I am TSI ready for anything, now I have taken an accuplacer before in my hometown and was not TSI met for the math portion, I know for a pure simple fact that I will not pass the math portion, and I am worried that I will be in school for like 4 years if I have to do remedial math, just to get myself caught up to get college ready, and this is supposed to be a 2 year program If I have to take remedial math, would that prolong my 3 years I had planned to be in school. I was thinking that maybe I could get my pre reqs done in a year, but with this math blunder, now I am scared that it will take me that much longer to complete my basics and actually reach my goal. I am only 20 years old, about to be 21 and have been working as an aide since I was 16, I am ready to go to school to be a nurse but again, this remedial math thing is what has me worried that it will prolong me reaching my goal. :'(
  7. I got ya, by no means I didnt interpret that like you said be lazy or put residents at risk, using every single minute with them, yeah I see what you mean, do you just pick up on short cuts as an aide, the ones that are ok to use.?
  8. Aww thanks you guys, that made me feel better, I guess the transition from 2 to 10 to 6 to 2 was a bit of a culture shock to me, I mean the other aides say I am fast and a good aide, but I beat myself up, and like I said, its only been 4 years I have been an aide, 2 on day shift, when I started, I guess 2 to 10 was the basics, then 6 to 2 became something more advanced. Also I just started working at this facility so I am trying to adapt. I dont want to become a nurse, I love doing direct care very much, and if this is what im gonna do for my life, I feel I should get better, but like you two said, it takes time. Only thing I can do is show up to work all the time so I can get a grasp of what my groove is there. Because a bjnch of older aides I talked to, say its all about finding your own rhythem. And missingyou, shortcuts, I was taught to do it the right way, like im not saying I so it by the book bwcause anyone who says they do things strictly by the book as an aide is probably lying lol. when I hear shortcuts, to me a shortcut would be double briefing or something, those are what I dont do, now I do find shorter ways of getting them dressed faster, example, a reaident goes to have a bm every morning when I come in, I put the resident on the toilet, before I take her I set her clothes, glasses, makeup wash rag in the restroom and dress her after she has had her bm. Things like those shortcuts I take. If they really are considered that or just a multitasking system. What do you guys think? Oh and sorry for misspelling, im typing on my galaxy phone lol
  9. Ok but where I work, I have no such thing as a hallmate, I mean we helo eachother with hoyer lifts and what not, but as far as helping get people up, we dont. Its just the way things are here. so when will I become a pro at this stuff, I noticed some very good aides that do extra care and still get in and out. Its like, how do they do it.

  11. How do I survive day shift, alot of times I feel myself dragging or falling behind, how do you get better at 6 to 2, I used to work 2 to 10 for 2 years now I have been at it for 2 years. How do I get better.
  12. I have been an aide for 6 years and had a girl fresh out of school like this towards me, although nobody said anything positive about her work, she pressed on to me and the others that her way was the correct way. Me, I have no problem letting another aide know whats up, I told her she needed to mind her business, let me handle my residents how I have been and get to steppin. Needless to say, that girl hung herself because she did not do something right and ended up losing her job. As one post above said, the people that think they are the best, are not, and as for you honey, let your work speak for itself, and let the girl go on talking, remember, you have one DON and one administrator, last time I checked, the cna's were neither.
  13. This year as of January 1st is my 6 year mark as an aide, my question is what makes a good aide? I worked with a woman in her 50's and everyone even staff loved her and said she was a good aide, like they highly respected Her or asked for her input on things or came to her for things. How does one get that recognition, and what exactly makes a great aide, I work in long term care.
  14. Ok so missing you, how is it you guys are pros. I want to be Like that, like today, I had so many showers and we only have a few shower rooms so we have to share, I mean today I did last round at 1 and did 2 showers all before 2pm. How do I get them done before lunch, like what would you do as soon as you came in. As soon as our feet hit the hall its non stop power walking up till 2, any advice on how to get everything done before lunch. I have non shower people up from 6 am and showers to do still, so who should I do at 9 first? My people changed first or finish showers then pad round?
  15. Ok well how do you get faster at t hat kind of work ? How is it the older aides are so quick
