"Hello. My name is. . ."

  1. Some people know how to introduce themselves and strike up a conversation -- too well.

There's a lady that's lived at my facility for the past year. I take care of her at least once weekly. She has dementia, but not to the point that she needs to be placed in a dementia unit. She often forgets that she has met someone, and is a very "outspoken" lady so she will introduce herself to anyone and everyone.

Tonight, she saw me and said this:

My name is XXXXXXXXX. . .

    I am 102 years old. . .

Both of my parents are dead. . .

    I like white ice cream . .

And sometimes my poop sticks to my bottom.

    What's your name?"

Let's just say I was unable to come up with a response to top hers.

Before I left for the weekend, I asked her if she was going to watch the fireworks on TV this weekend or maybe eat some of the BBQ that activities dept. is doing (Sunday is Independence Day in the US).

    Her response?

"I'm 102 years old and both of my parents are dead."

    I should have known.

Is she really 102 years old??

I had one lady who was flipping out about her parents the other day. To distract her, I said, "How old are you?" and she goes, "98... oh... that means I don't HAVE any parents!" lol. Her flip-out ended right then and there.

No idea. I don't think any of the CNAs know for sure. It would be interesting to find out if she really is 102. I've taken care of people even older than that.
