Just a general question. In clinicals do you get to go to lunch on your own or do you have to stay at lunch with your instructors? We aren't allowed to even step outside for anything. We have to stay with our instructors even during our lunch hour. Starting to feel really hemmed in and ultra controlled. Just wondering how other places handle this.
Not if they want a clear, concise nursing report. By the end of the day I'm impossible to be around +just ask my husband lol). Everyone needs a break and I hear the nurses at the clinical site telling their supervisor they are leaving the floor for 10-15 minutes. If you are in the middle of caring for a patient I understand not leaving, but in all honesty we have 1 patient per student and spend most of our time wandering the halls looking for something to do.

Are you assigned to a nurse? If you are why don't you go up to the nurse & ask her what you can do to help with your 1 patient instead of roaming the halls.

Well if you have only 1 patient and spend most of your time wandering the halls then what do you need a break for? There is nothing overwhelming that you are doing that warrants you leaving the floor to clear your mind. As a nurse, once you have accepted patient load , you cannot leave them until your are relieved of your assignment , doing so may be considered abandonment.
We aren't allowed to do ANYTHING without our instructor being right there (except for ADL's) . Because of patient population 6 out of the 8 weeks at this clinical site, they have sent some of the regular nurses home. If there's not enough work for the people who work there it really doesn't leave much for the students to do.

You can at least answer call lights if the nurses are busy (yes, even if it's not your assigned patient). If they need some water or something you can do, do it. Don't just stand around.

As a nurse, you won't be able to leave for your lunch (if you get a lunch). I only had one job where I was able to go out & bring lunch (or dinner, depending on the shift) in. But that place was, bizarre.
