Hi,
I've been reading the board about the CPNE, and from what I can gather, this test is in place of actual Clinical time spent in a formal program, is that right?
I'm considering excelsior and also some local schools, I just don't want to wait a year and 1/2 to start the nursing classes at the local schools (have to finish some more pre-req's before I can apply). Any info would be helpful, Thanks.

i looked into getting my ADN from excelsior and was told that at the end of the program i would need to do a 2 1/2 day weekend clinical before graduating. i've heard the clinical is very tough and requires much advanced and expensive preparation in order to pass.

It is not necessarily in place of clinical, because it is much less time. It is a test of clinical skills that you already have from prior experience.

The CPNE is not a substitute for clinical experience it is a test of clinical preparedness.
Just curious what your current job or background is? Are you working as a nurse currently?
Yes,
I'm currently an LPN. But right now i'm working at an Assistive Living facility and I don't think I will get very much experience there. In a formal program the students work under the License of the teacher to practice the skills in a clinical setting. But, if, as an LPN, I can only do what my license allows, how will I get the clinical experience to pass the CPNE for the RN?

In the hospital where I am doing a clinincal rotation, LPNs and RNs have basically the same responsibilities. Two exceptions I know of are push IV meds and Blood infusions. The LPNs give all the other meds, start IVs, draw blood, patient assessments, etc. so I am not sure what other skills you are speaking of? I know each hospital operates differently maybe that is where the difference is. If you feel you need more clinical experience have you considered a prn position in a hospital? The CPNE is very specific have you had the chance to read through one? There are several EC groups on Yahoo with a great deal of info about the CPNE.
Good luck.
