CLINICAL v. STAFF NURSE

Published

hello everyone,

i'm currently applying for jobs in the NYC area, but am getting a little confused with some of the titles. one of the hospitals i am applying has the available position titled "clincal nurse I."

what is the difference between a staff nurse and a clinical nurse? i've asked two nurses (a staff nurse and a clinical nurse manager) and neither of them were able to give me an answer. any clarity would be appreciated.

Specializes in neurology, cardiology, ED.

My guess is that it's the same thing. Just that different facilities refer to the position differently...

Specializes in orthopedics, telemetry, PCU.

In my experience (applying to a million places :) ) they are the same thing...clinical nurse I is a title generally given in a facility that uses a clinical ladder for nursing advancement, and is a position that requires minimal experience (clinical nurse II is someone with a years experience, and so on). I think staff nurse just means an RN with no particular qualifications/certifications. hope that helps!

Specializes in NICU Level III.

I have a similar question. I have seen job descriptions: at the same hospital, on the same unit, for "Registered nurses" as well as "staff RN." It seems that a "staff RN" is a more entry-level job than one for a "registered nurse." Is this correct?

Thanks

They're pretty much the same... some hospitals just like to state it differently :)
