Clinical Tomorrow with new skills

Hey everyone,

Just thought I would try to calm down a little by sharing. I had pre-clinical today (we find out our assignment). As it turns out I have a very difficult med/surg patient. She has aspiration pneunmonia as well as schitzophrenia. She has tube feeding, IVPB Abx, total cares, Turn q2h! Arghhh!! I have never done TF or given meds via a TF. My instructor says she has every faith in me, but I think she is required to say that. It's supposed to snow here tonite 3-5 inches on top of all the stress. Any advice??

Take a deep breath, hope that helps. Seriously hope it goes better than it sounds like you think it will. Just think of the skills you will have after that clinical day. Many 1sts. good luck!

Oh! Can sympathize! Hope your clinical goes well. Your instructor sounds as if she is very supportive. That certainly helps. Definitely use her as a resource.

Just remember, no such thing as a stupid question! And the day will be over quicker than you'll know. The fact that you are apprehensive is the sign of an up and coming good nurse.

Get a good night's sleep. And try to relax and enjoy the day-you can do it! jeanne

review your skills check off list that you did in lab before going in to do it on an actual patient tomorrow. and good luck! TF aren't that bad.

:p I have done a couple of peg feedings and they really are not that hard to do, but one thing to remember is to use asepsis allot of instructors are very critical about that. I have to agree with the others,though,review your skills and then if you still have any questions ask your instructer before you start the procedure. Your instructer does not expect you to do it perfectly the first time after all you are in training. Good Luck!

When ever I do something new, I always have my instructor or the bedside nurse talk me through the procedure. I do it but I have them to back me up if I get into trouble.

I'm nervous too. I have my first full day of internal medicine clinical tomorrow. I hope I hear everything I'm supposed to.:eek:

Hey Guys!

Clinical went just fine. My patient pulled her NG that night, soooo I did not have to do TF. I was actually pretty disappointed because I had psyched myself up to do the procedure. I had a really cool co-assigned who would've been glad to help. The next day my patient pulled her IV, so it was fine. Thanks for all the great advice!! The snow was still terrible, took me 1 1/2 hours to go 40 miles!
