I experience extreme anxiety before clinical rotation. Even though I know my skills, my instructor intimidates me. How can I get past this? I'm in my 3rd semester and have 1 to go. This is the first semester that I've felt this way.

I know lots of nursing students get nervous because of an intimidating nursing instructor. Do you know what it is about your instructor that intimidates you? Perhaps if you knew what it was exactly you could know better how to overcome your nerves.

Is it just this clinical that intimidates you? Maybe it will be better with a new instructor next semester.

just learn to face your fears. remember there are many opportunities you'll miss if your too afraid. way back in college, i am afraid asking my clinical instructors especially when I don't understand their lectures. though I read the book, its best explained by someone who has a knowledge and experienced of it. but when we did our hospital duties, whenever I'm unsure I made sure that I asked and didn't pretend I know what I was doing coz its the pt's life and the CI's license whose at stake. well sometimes they get irritated. lol
I guess I'm just afraid of making mistakes. I have this instructor next semester too, so I need to get over it.

I had a instructor like that in my last semester, I would try to know all I can about my client. Then I would pour on the questions to the instructor, she was pretty sharp, but I learn more in that semester than all others. There are actually some good teachers out there, the intimidating one's are the ones that want you to learn. There were a few like that at my college. So use this experince to learn all you can, believe me you will be able to tell the difference on your exams, and it really helps with the Hesi.

Thank you all so much for your support. I had a better clinical day yesterday. Some of the women in my group, who I feel are so much more experienced than I am, feel the same way. I guess I have to realize that I'm a student.
