clinical health requirements help!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi I desperately need advice

I'm starting clinicals in September 2012 and I was going around getting paper work filled out so I could hand them into my school before I start clinicals. On top of my regular physical examination, I need to hand in a documentation of my urinalysis. I had a dipstick urine test done at the doctors and they discovered that I had blood in my urine. I'm going to the lab to get a full urinalysis done later this week. I'm afraid that I have a UTI and I don't know if this means I can't move onto clinicals. Please if someone could give me advice as to what I should be expecting or do that would be great

I wouldn't think uti. Would interfere with physical. Plenty of people get them, simple antibiotics and good hydration will get rid of it quickly,.while I have not started the program yet. I do know uti are not catchy, drink a lot of water, avoid caffeine and carbonated.beverages if possible, a odd when you need to. Don't hold it in too long. Bloods not a good sign, but it just could be urethral irritation. I am extremely prone to uti, with quick care, proper meds, and some care on your part to remember to drink enough to cleanse your body. You will be ship shape in less than 10 days on average. Well before you do clinical time if I read your post properly. Take care.

No, they will not kick you out from clinicals for a simple UTI. The purpose for the health requirements is to make sure that you are healthy. And if you have a disease process in progress, it is your responsibility as a healthcare provider to be aware of your health status at all times. It could potentially be unfair to you or your client if you end up transmitting or contracting diseases without your knowledge.

No, nursing programs do not demand perfect health at all times.

As for the blood in the urine? UTI is very possible.

However, if you have something like pneumonia? That is a different story.

Likewise, I happen to have a classmate who has Lupus, a disease process that will eventually make this person immunocomprimised. This person will be a junior this year in the nursing program.

I wouldn't be worried about a UTI getting you kicked out from clinical. I haven't been accepted to nursing school yet, but I did look into whether having Crohn's disease and being on an immunosuppressant would cause and problem. If something such as that is acceptable, I'm sure a UTI wouldn't be an issue.

Hun, do not worry! Funny enough, my last drug screen for nursing school, I found out the same day I had a UTI lol. It's just coincidence, they are simply checking for drug screen /making sure you are overall a healthy person. A little infection like that is no biggie. But get on some antibiotics!

At the most, they might ask for proof that you got it treated, but I doubt that they will say anything about it. Relax!!
