Cleveland State University Accelerated BSN Spring 2014

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hello,

I am attending CSU's accelerated BSN program this coming January and was wondering if there is anyone else on here that starts at the same time or if anyone is currently in the program.

I'm bummed as well, actually I just read that email she sent us. I thought she was really funny, patient and helpful. I was honestly looking forward to talking to her since she has a Master's in Experimental Psychology. And I love Psychology too. I didn't know they accepted 88 students, I thought it was just 80. My orientation is scheduled on January 7th too, so I probably will see you lol.

I thought so too....Maybe we will have other students in our class then. Is everyone's orientation on the 7th? That will be pretty big, I'm sure we can meet up there or do a friend request on Facebook. I think psych is very interesting however I don't think I could do that for a living. My buddy I graduated with at OU is applying to Wright State's ABSN program and is thinking about doing psych.

Oh nice, I work with a fair number of psych patients where I work but it's mainly considered a skilled nursing facility. With psych patients you need to be very patient and understanding. It's not for everyone, I imagine most would not like to do it. I'd like to add you on Facebook. I'll pm you my name. I heard psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner mostly focus on medication prescriptions and not psychotherapy though. They leave that for the psychologists and social workers.

Hmmm....I am a pretty patient guy so I think I could do it. I could also see myself doing what a psych NP does. Id imagine the psychologists are probably better trained to handle the therapy end of it.

What do you like about Neuro, cardio and nurse anesthesia? I mean why are you considering these different specialties?

In school we learned a lot about the heart and nervous system so I really enjoyed those two. For anesthesia I find it intriguing, plus it has a lot of job security and it pays well.

Hi,

I am also applying to this program this cycle and I had a few questions. I have never met someone who has applied before, so I have no idea what to accept or what my chances are. Do you know about how many people apply/get interviewed/get accepted? My gpa is around 3.1 3.2, but I have a lot of experience as a nurses aide, so I'm not sure if that's an important factor. I'm not sure what to expect. I am attending an upcoming information session soon, but I figured since you guys have already been through it you might have some tips. Thank you.

Your gpa is fine, as long as it is above a 3.0 that's all that matters. Your experience as a nurse aide will also go far. A lot of students already work as an aide at the clinic (I am currently waiting to hear back from UH). I believe there are around 80 seats and they will usually interview around 100. They do this because they know not everyone will accept or something may come up. The interview was interesting. You sign up for a date and you do it in groups. An instructor will ask questions and then each applicant goes around and answers. You then have to pick a question at the end and write an essay. The only downfall is that they take FOREVER to let you know if you have been accepted or not.

Thanks so much for answering me so quick! I'm just nervous because I did it so last minute, about a week ago...the deadline is June 1st...so hopefully it's not rolling admissions! Do you know how many people apply? I had a reference from a chem professor and my manager who is an RN as well. Do you know what month they started conducting interviews? Thanks again..sorry for all of the questions

Not a problem. They dont do rolling admissions. They start going through all the applications after June 1st. I had two professors and a PT do mine. They usually have over 100 apply but a lot are eliminated because either they are missing documents or they aren't even eligible. I think around mid july they ask when you can come in for an interview and they will provide you with dates. It isn't until mid-August when you hear if you got in or not.

Hi OUxPhys,

I have been accepted to the program for Spring 2015 and have a few questions about the programs.

I know that the program is 4 straight semesters but are there any breaks? (even as short as a week)

Where are the clinicals taking place? I know they accept about 80 students, are all 80 in one class together? What are your opinions on the strength of the program (basically are you getting a good education there)? I have heard nothing but good things about the basic BSN but nothing about ABSN. So any tips or other info is greatly appreciated...

thanks in advance,

Richelle

Hi Richelle,

Yes, you do get breaks. Whenever the school doesn't have class going on, neither do you. So you get a week for spring break, few weeks for winter break, and usually a week or two at the beginning and end of summer. The ABSN program is just as great as the basic program because it is exactly the same and taught by the same professors, just completed in half the time.

Clinicals take place the second half of your first spring semester. I just wrapped up my first clinical at the Cleveland Clinic. You basically have a clinical every semester from this point on.

If your going to work I recommend nothing past part-time and if you cna swing it PRN. Getting a job as an aide will only acclerate your experience and help prepare you for future clinicals and the NCLEX.

It's a great program but it's tough. Plan on having no social life for the next 15 months or so. It is very easy to fall behind and once you do it is very hard to catch up.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
