Cleaning in GI Lab?

Well, I am an OR nurse working at a small hospital (in the OR) where we also do EGD's and Colonoscopies...anyway I was wondering what the room cleaning protocol is for the GI Lab...do you empty the trashcans every case? Mop floors after each case? I like to wipe everything and mop the floors after every case. We also change the water each case (which someone else told me their institution does not do). I looked for a "Standard" but can't find one. A Dr would like us to stop mopping to cut down on time but as an OR nurse I just can't seem to do that...any input is appreciated!

No one has information on any GI Lab standards they are willing to share?

I work in an endoscopy unit inside of a hospital. Environmental services is responsible for cleaning the unit at the end of the day and for terminal cleans (changing curtains, mopping, etc). But the endo staff handles wiping down cables between pt's, equipment, stretchers and furniture. Trash is collected by environmental services when it's full or stinking up the joint, but we handle collecting dirty linens (gowns, bed linens). As long as everyone does their part, we're a very efficient unit and can turn over up to 6 rooms rapidly at a time.

Well, what I was wondering is...we have 6 cases back to back...do you empty the trash or linens between each patient? Mop the floor between every patient? We do and heard many don't...it would be nice to save time between cases but want to make sure we are doing this correctly...thank you for any additional responses you might have!

I work output endo. We do 12 to 15 cases per day per procedure room. We do not empty trash or mop between cases. Obviously we would if there was some kind of obvious need. Of course, colonoscopy and uppers are clean procedures rather than sterile......which makes them very different than your typical OR case. I understand your apprehension about how things are done. What do the endo guidelines say? Are they different for hospital vs outpatient procedures??

That is what I was wondering....are there guidelines for GI lab that dictate this? We do get things poopy at timed...not cleaning would be unacceptable to me, but I want to know what the guidelines are for GI (I looked couldn't find anything). Thanks!

Thank you so much for that info. I had not found those sources yet. I will print them and use them for a reference. Thank you again!
