I am not an infection control nurse but I will add my . The hospital I work currently uses a sanitizer gel called Pre-Klenz. It is made by Steris and comes in a yellow bottle. We are to spray this and rinse with water in 5 mins or so. Then we are to use wipe them dry and finally use a bleach wipe that comes in those pop up containers. That is for visibly soiled scissors. I would imagine if they are not visibly soiled an alcohol wipe followed by a bleach wipe would be sufficient. I know some nurses don't even bother to clean their scissors. Sorry that's not very technical, but hopefully you get the idea.
When I worked in SNFs I owned 15+ pair of bandage scissors. I used 1 per person then tossed them in a ziplock bag and ran through the dishwasher at home every night. When you can buy a decent 4" Lister for $4 there isn't a good reason not to have a bunch.
The hospital I work at now, we're not allowed to carry our own scissiors. They all come cleaned & sanitized from central processing are single use per patient and go back.

I have a question..what is the correct/proper way to clean your bandge scissors? I work in LTC. During the day I will do multiple dressings on different residents. I currently clean my scissors thoroughly with alcohol wipes before beginning and at the end/or in between if I am any where in contact with "dirty" itmes.
What if it is a MRSA wound...we do have bleach wipes now available.
Are the alcohol wipes sufficient for most wounds and bleach wipes for MRSA?
What is the current accepted practice? Thanks!
