Class of 2006

Nursing Students General Students

Hey yall!

Just wondering if there are any of us out there still working on pre-reqs - hopeful nursing graduates of 2006?

Roll call! :)

I'm the 26yo mama of two boys (5yrs and 18mos). I work FT right now and am taking my pre-reqs at night. Hoping to get into a BSN program and start my nursing core/clinicals in fall 2004!

Specializes in ICU.

Hopefully I will be in one of the three programs next fall. I am hoping to go to my current CC because it has the best CC program in the area. The other one is not as good. I am hoping to get my RN first (even though I want a BSN and a MSN) because the closest four year school that offers nursing is about an hour away and God knows how much further the clinicals will be. (I have two kids, a husband, and one car so the logistics of it would be awful) I would have to travel all the way up there for my junior year and then the senior year is at a local four year school about 30 minutes away. So I think it would be easiest on my family to get the RN and do the RN-BSN online or the four year college that is an hour away has the RN-BSN and they hold those classes at the college near me . Not to mention if I go for the RN I will only have to be a part time student because I have will have all the other classes finished, if I go for the BSN I will still have more electives to take. Unfortunately, it is majorly competitive here. The not so good CC I have a good shot at getting in next year. The one I want to go to has 400 applicants for 90 spots. They don't even consider your grades when they pick who gets the spots. This is the craziest thing. We have what is called the point system. Most of your points come from the college placement test. Possible 360 can be made on the test. Then any grade C or above gets 3 points, used to be A's were worth five pts and B's three and C's one but they didn't have the man power in the counseling center to tally up all those points. If you have a CNA cert. that gets you 10 points. Those first ninety people with the highest points get in. Last year a girl in my A&P class who barely got a C got into the nursing program while some of the A students didn't get in. Does this sound right to you guys? So I will have all the points I possibly can by the end of this semester. Hopefully it is enough. Really makes me mad that my grades are not even looked at though I almost have a 3.5. Arg! This year I am going full time taking classes that the CC I want to go to wants, and some for the other CC and making sure it will all count towards going to the four year school too. I am taking Microbiology, Psychology, A Study Skills class (just for the three points it will give me), Humanities (Myth in the Human Culture), and Sociology (Group Processes). So Iam just really hoping and kinda stressing about getting in next year. I have been waiting around for seven years now. First it was because the kids were small, then we couldn't afford it (not that we can afford my classes now HA HA), and last year I have been taking all the prereq's. I am sick of waiting. LOL! Anyone in the Asheville, NC area?

Aww Dublin, you know they say you're only as old as you feel! There was a guy from another BBS that I "know" from So Cal and little me from the rural south never had really considered that despite the fact that there are more schools/opportunities in larger areas, there's also LOTS more competition! :)

Yeah she's working at wal-mart at night now. Thats hard on me now cause i have to exclusively

watch the kids.

How's she liking the job? Do you have any family nearby that will be able to help once you get into classes again? I guess I just forget how blessed I am that I have such a supportive family, so nearby.

I am also a 2006 hopeful!!! I am married with three sons from age 5-15!!! Less see I am just

finishing up my prereqs now and start clinicals on May 25. Wow that's less than a week away!!!!

A week away? Did you mean August 25th? Or did you mean a year away? What a houseful of boys it sounds like you have! No girls except for me here either! LOL

I'm taking A&P I, Microbiology, Nutrition, Statistics, and Texas Govt. (17 hrs total)

Sounds like you're gonna be busy! :)

Hi! I am 19 years old and I am a sophmore enrolled full time at my local CC working on my pre-reqs. Starting August 18 I will be taking A&P I, College Algebra, World Civ. II, Intro to Soc., and Developmental Psych.

I'm sure you'll do fine .. are you just in school full-time or do you have a job as well? Keep me posted if you find out/hear anything good/bad about any of the Mississippi BSN programs, would ya? Thanks! :)

Looks like there will be A LOT of us with big grins on our faces in 2006! I am also part of the class of 2006. I'll be starting my first nursing courses August 25. This will

be my sophmore year of a BSN program. We had our orientation on the 8th, which made me so

excited to start schoool I am about to burst!

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!

I think we're all hoping so! Thanks Leesie!

I hope this thread will keep going and we can keep each other posted on how things are going! :)

I wish we started nursing classes sophomore year here, I'm so excited for 2004 to roll around that I can hardly wait! :)

hat offers nursing is about an hour away and God knows how much further the clinicals will be

This is something I'm worried about too.. I hate commuting, but I live an hour away from all the colleges in my area. Very frustrating, but I probably won't move once I get back into school full-time since I have such a supportive family in this area.

Humanities (Myth in the Human Culture)

This sounds like a really interesting class.

Some of the community colleges around here use a similar point system, some don't seem to have any rhyme or reason to who they let into their program.. the BSN program I plan on applying to had 350 apps last year for 50 spots.. they based on ACT/GPA mainly.

Count me in :-) I start this semester (aug. 25) and hopefully will graduate in 2006. I already have my schedule. Clinicals will start as of mid of october. Except Nursing classes I also take Human Body, English Drama, Fitness and Men, Women and Society. i am 24, mother of 2 boys (Matthew 6 years old and Mike 17 months)

Ours are close in age - I have Dusty (5) and Micah (18 mos)! :)

I'm envious of your Women and Society course - I'd love to take some Women's Studies classes, but haven't had the opportunity yet! :)

What are your plans in terms of childcare-time management? My oldest one will start Grade 1, the youngest is yet to start day care. I know, here in French part of Canada we're fortuate to have subsidized day care system - 120 a month. But the anxiety about time/school/kids management is kinda international :chuckle .

Definately!

Dusty starts kindergarten this year, and they offer an after-school care program that he'll go to until I get home.

Micah is already in a home-based daycare... it's VERY inexpensive for childcare, mostly because I live in a rural area. For him I only pay something like $200 US a month for full-time daycare while I am at work. So that won't be anything new for him - I've never been able to afford to be a SAHM. At one point, our state offered some daycare subsidies, but because of budget cuts those have been eliminated for all families except those receiving TANF ("welfare" - which I don't really understand, since most of those families are also unemployed, why they would need daycare assistance?).

Anyway.. as far as finding time to spend with the boys - that's a tough one. Some days I honestly feel like I'm shortchanging them by having a Mom who seems to either always be working at her job, working on school work, or short tempered and irritable from the stress of both... but my kids are fabulous little guys and we try to make the time we spend together high quality even if it's not high quantity. I think that one day, when they're older, they'll understand that we all had to make sacrifices to forge a better life for ourselves.

Boy, that got to be much longer than I intended! LOL

I'm class of 2006!!!

But, um, I'm 19, living-with-boyfriend, one cat, 4 rats, and a fish

So what classes are you guys taking this fall?

-Anatomy (hopefully I'll do better than I did in HS - D- :()

-Religion (yay! I'm a philosopher at heart)

-Chemistry (boo! I'm a philosopher at heart :p)

-Communication Fundamentals (Um, I know how to talk already, thx)

-Nursing 103 (I have no idea what this is. Diagrams of nurses? "OK class, now what is missing from this picture?" "HER STEHOSCOPE!")

I'm taking an NA Training course & A&P II

Rats!? :o

I can't really say anything... our new puppy, a chihuahua, was lovingly referred to by her breeders' husband as a "rat on acid" heh.

I take it that's your kitty in your avatar? CUTIE!

Does your NA class last a whole semester?

Thanks for the encouragemnt! :D I am only attending school full time and I am in the process of job hunting. I was hoping for work study again but my pell grant covered my tuition so there was no need for work study. Of course I will keep you posted on anything I learn about the BSN programs in MS.

Specializes in Oncology, Emergency Department.

Hi, I'm beginning Sept. 8th after transferring from another University. Should have about 3- 31/2 years left until I get my BSN.

Got my books this week. Freaked out when I paged through the Algebra & Trigonometry text. My other courses are 21st Century Humanities, Biology, Orientation to Nursing and Office XP (the school is very technology focused). The following quarter is intense with Chemistry I, Speech, A&P I, Concepts of Health and Interpersonal Communication. There are three levels of A&P that must be completed. Last quarter consists of Organic Chemistry I, Microbiology, A&P II and History & Theories of Nursing. Seems like alot for one year to me.

Anyone else on a quarter system?
