Clarification about Job Requirements

Published

Hi everyone! I'm an overseas RN and currently taking up an Aged Care course here in Australia. I want to apply for a part-time work as a Personal Care Assistant at Nursing homes. I just want to ask if do I have to finish first my Certificate III in Aged Care course or is my 1 1/2 years of experience as an overseas nurse will suffice for a carer job? Some people told me that some Nursing homes accept work experience as a substitute for the Certificate....Hope someone can answer my question...Thanks!

Specializes in OR and Midwifery.

I worked in a nursing home while I was studying my div 1. Had no experience except for 3 weeks placement I had done in 1st semester. I think most of the age care places are so desperate for pcas. Start applying... It couldn't hurt. And make sure you tell them your willing to stick around when you've finished your course!

Why oh why are you doing an aged care course when you are an RN in your own country.

Is this a quick ditch effort to get into Australia without paying out a lot of money to stay and workk here and later work on becoming an RN here.

Gaining CERT 4 in aged care will not give you working rights in Australia, only while you are studying, as PCA's nursing attendants etc etc are not on the skilled shortage list and therefore an employer cannot, legally, sponsor a visa for you to work with them.

Hope you have some other way of staying and working such as already have those rights through family as you will not get it by doing a certificate in aged care.
