Civilian nurses taking AF jobs?

Published

Here is another interesting thing I have noticed most of our clinics are staffed by contracted nurses. Who is setting those up?

taking they have been offered...

- through various agencies (contract)

- sometimes found on usajobs

- sometimes through, i think if i recall the name right, the af personnel center

sometimes the offers come from having posted résumé on some of the online sites...

when i was attempting to go active i had a few offers....

My guess is this is much like the so-called "rent-a-cops" at installation gates. The number of civilians in military type jobs seems to be directly proportional to the number of military members deployed.

In other words, the ops tempo for RNs is so high it's better for them to staff clinics with more civilians so they can keep the RN skills sharp for deployments.

Just a guess. I too have noticed a lot of civilians floating around WHMC - a lot more than there used to be in military hospitals (civilians are not only non-deployable, they're cheaper!).

this may have some merit but the military has for a long time been converting / farming out some jobs to the civilian sector.

probably true but also could be the only way they can get the slots filled..... in the private world hospitals use agency because they have to not usually because they want to.

i live near warner robins air force base and there is almost always something in the news about civilian jobs. i would believe though in lean times the civilian jobs would go up in smoke way quicker than those on active duty.
