Hi! I'm currently still in it. But the residency program is a full year long, filled with 1 weekly online lecture and some in person skills days. And we are on orientation with a preceptor for 16 weeks. We're on the floor 2 times a week and then one class day, which makes up for our full time schedule and its a good balance. After that you're on your own but still have a class day like once a month I believe. I'm currently on week 9 and the orientation process has been great so far! Everyone here is so supportive and the orientation is really setting us up for success in my opinion. It's a bit longer than other places bc the units are pretty specialized. let me know if you have any other questions! :^)

Thank you so much!! How is it being on a BMT floor? Do you like it so far? Any pros/cons you can think of?

I love it so far! To be honest it is a lot to take in as a new grad bc of how much hematology oncology is. the learning curve is very steep. but its so cool to be a part of giving these pts a whole brand new system of cells. a lot of the pts are here for up to months so its also nice bc u get to be with them a lot and you get to rlly know them. and u meet them at all different stages in the process. u have some that are like newly diagnosed, others who are days away from transplant, others where theyre days/weeks post and u start to see the new cells kicking in and all the side effects that come w that. and unfortunately also pts who are on comfort care as well. but all these nurses are so unbelievably smart and know everything about hem onc and I think its a super interesting specialty. I wouldnt say it feels like a med/surg floor. our ratio is 1:3. I think the only "con" right now is that it can get hard to remember/understand the physiology and all with hematology cancers, so studying it on your own is super important to continue to understand the differences with the cancers and all the different treatments.
