Citrus College LVN Program (Introduction to Health Occupations Prerequisite)

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Before I entered this program there was little to no information on this site for the Citrus College (Glendora, CA) LVN program so I will take it upon myself to give as much information as possible now that I'm enrolled. Hopefully someone in my shoes about six months ago will be able to use this thread as a reference.

First off, this program is highly competitive. The first step to get accepted into the LVN program at Citrus College is to take NRS 100, also known as Intro to Health Occupations for one semester. This is a two-part class which runs two days a week (for example, I go on Thursdays and Fridays), and is usually about 3 hours long per class. The first day usually consists of Pharmacology and the second is Anatomy and Physiology (so on Thursday I get lectured on Pharmacology and Friday I get lectured on A&P). You get quizzed twice a week, every week, at the beginning of each class. At the end of the semester you take your finals which you must pass with an 85% or better.

Out of the 250 students that take this class each semester only the top 40 are accepted into the actual LVN program.

For the past couple of years the cut off for the top 40 has been a 95% overall score, meaning you need to maintain an A throughout the entire semester in this particular class to get into the LVN program. If you don't make it in your first try, you get one more try before you are barred from the program. As I said, it's highly competitive. This is an extremely difficult class as well just because of the sheer amount of information you need to retain weekly. Remember, you're not taking one class, but two classes - Pharmacology and A&P. Unfortunately they don't tell you where you stand as the class is going on, only your grade, so that leads to quite a bit of mental torment during this three to four month period.

As it stands, I'm currently enrolled in NRS 100 and have been maintaining a decent grade (92%). We're only in the first couple weeks so lower scores are expected as the students adjust to the class. An 80% is roughly average for this adjustment period.

Unfortunately this is where my knowledge on the program pretty much ends but I will be updating this thread as my journey through this program continues. If anyone wants, feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer your questions and update the first post as much as possible. My goal is to provide information since I couldn't find any information on this particular program and that alone is intimidating.

I'm studying roughly 3 hours a day, sometimes more just to feel "comfortable" with the concepts, hopefully this leads to me getting accepted into the program. Only time will tell. I am confident, however, that even if I don't make it this semester, I will be armed with the knowledge and have an advantage next semester.

Wish me luck.

Hey reign! I just got back on this haha!! I was in Mrs Ellis class and I think I can be considered a little bit of a loud mouth! oh and Im a mommy. tmoni- we went to foothill rehab in the first semester ad some of us went to woods and one other, I forget the name. Now in the new semester I think were going to queen of the valley and foothill pres. Im excited. The more we get to do, and reign was right, our class became a family, ESPECIALLY our clinical groups. were a few weeks into our winter break and I miss everyone! good luck to you!

hi,

I recently got into the lvn program at citrus, i already ordered the required nursing kit, I was wondering if anyone in the program ordered the nursing kit offered by dove, the uniform company, and if so, did they find it useful to have.

thanksss

also reign and/or mama in the citrus program do you guys do care plans?

I started NRS-100 last week...Thur/Fri class at 5:30. LVN program now only accepting top TWENTY (20) students...No longer top 40. Half my class didnt show for the second day after hearing the news. Competition

ooh MAMA..i got you kid...I know exactly who u are. HAHA Im a mama too...and we are almost DONE..woot woot!

Guys dont be discouraged when you find out they are only taking the top 20. I never thought in a million years Id make the top 30 out of like 300 students, but I did...and as a parent, with a job. If you want it bad enough, you will devote ALL of your time to studying for the tests to assure you are consistantly on top. I guess when I first got in there, I was discouraged by such the small amount of people who were making it in, and I thought that could never be me...BUT then I decided it was going to be me, no matter what, and I made it happen. Its not that hard honestly...it just takes the dedication to study 24/7. The ones who didnt make it are the ones who didnt want it bad enough. So go for it and go 100%, or dont waste your time.

Mama and I graduate this August..time has flown by so fast. Seems like just yesterday I was enrolling for nrsg100. I love my nursing family!

Peace..see you tomorrow MAMAMAMA for our Cardiac test with Mrs. B. :/

Dear friend,

- So may I know how many students the Citrus school will enroll into NURS 100 now ? 250 ? or just 100 students ?

- How's the quizz made ? short essay ? multiple choice ? fill in the blank ?

- Does Citrus college have LVN to RN program ? If yes , is there also a long waiting list ?

Hi I wanna go back to school but am a bit overwhelmed and am very interested in LV program what would be my first steps...

@Piano- The tests are multiple choice but there are two communication exercises that are fill in and short answer. I am not sure how many students are in nurs 100 right now, it all depends on how many teachers are doing it. Most of the teachers will let as many ppl in as there are seats.

@Babe- Just go see a counselor and get into nurs 100. its a preceptor course. They take the top 30 students. So bring your A Game!!

Good luck!

@Piano-There is an LVN-RN program. Not sure if they keep a wait list. contact the health sciences office and they can tell you more.

Hello, just wanted to say thanks for all your tips!!!! I ended up making it into the lvn prgram, and i just finshed last day of clinicals last week!!!! Thank God I made it through the program and nursin 100!!!! :)
