Citrus College LVN Program (Introduction to Health Occupations Prerequisite)

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Before I entered this program there was little to no information on this site for the Citrus College (Glendora, CA) LVN program so I will take it upon myself to give as much information as possible now that I'm enrolled. Hopefully someone in my shoes about six months ago will be able to use this thread as a reference.

First off, this program is highly competitive. The first step to get accepted into the LVN program at Citrus College is to take NRS 100, also known as Intro to Health Occupations for one semester. This is a two-part class which runs two days a week (for example, I go on Thursdays and Fridays), and is usually about 3 hours long per class. The first day usually consists of Pharmacology and the second is Anatomy and Physiology (so on Thursday I get lectured on Pharmacology and Friday I get lectured on A&P). You get quizzed twice a week, every week, at the beginning of each class. At the end of the semester you take your finals which you must pass with an 85% or better.

Out of the 250 students that take this class each semester only the top 40 are accepted into the actual LVN program.

For the past couple of years the cut off for the top 40 has been a 95% overall score, meaning you need to maintain an A throughout the entire semester in this particular class to get into the LVN program. If you don't make it in your first try, you get one more try before you are barred from the program. As I said, it's highly competitive. This is an extremely difficult class as well just because of the sheer amount of information you need to retain weekly. Remember, you're not taking one class, but two classes - Pharmacology and A&P. Unfortunately they don't tell you where you stand as the class is going on, only your grade, so that leads to quite a bit of mental torment during this three to four month period.

As it stands, I'm currently enrolled in NRS 100 and have been maintaining a decent grade (92%). We're only in the first couple weeks so lower scores are expected as the students adjust to the class. An 80% is roughly average for this adjustment period.

Unfortunately this is where my knowledge on the program pretty much ends but I will be updating this thread as my journey through this program continues. If anyone wants, feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer your questions and update the first post as much as possible. My goal is to provide information since I couldn't find any information on this particular program and that alone is intimidating.

I'm studying roughly 3 hours a day, sometimes more just to feel "comfortable" with the concepts, hopefully this leads to me getting accepted into the program. Only time will tell. I am confident, however, that even if I don't make it this semester, I will be armed with the knowledge and have an advantage next semester.

Wish me luck.

hi reignsoftball,

congrats on a job well done!:yeah:unfortunately, my daughter and i didn't make in the top 40 so you won't see us this year. but, we haven't given up-----------we're just not going for that program anymore and will concentrate on hacienda adult school, baldy view and pcc. i wish you the best of luck in your new endeavors.:nurse:

I was in Fernandez class last year for Fall, but was not able to get into program for medical reasons. I did continue for the rest of the class so I could have a better understanding of what was expected for the next time around. If anyone has any insight or tips please do pass on, since this will be my last chance! I do praise those who made it into the program, it's very competitive! A recent class for professor Williams, from my understanding no-one got in. And for Greene there was like 5 students with 100%!!!!

I am trying to find out exactly what days and times the program is once you get in? I'm assuming Monday thru Friday but what about the start and end time? I recently went to Hacienda-La Puente Adult School and am being selected to attend the pre-lvn program there, something similar but less competition. I'm tied between the two. If anyone know anything about that program please email me.

Also I heard Fernandez is retiring...anyone know if that is true?

Good luck to you all, you are truly amazing to be able to make it through! I wish everyone the best of luck and guidance for the future.

hi busybee112,

i think the rumors are true about ms fernandez retiring because she doesn't haven't any classes scheduled for the fall semester. ms. williiams is teaching all of the sections except 1, which mr. greene is teaching. i was thinking about trying the class again myself but i need to take other classes as well. congrats on getting an invite to hacienda.:yeah:

hi fishie,

Hey there, Ive been keeping up with this thread and finally started an account haha. I took Mrs Fernandez in the Spring and she confirmed with me that she will not be returning in the Fall. She really was wonderful but Williams is also a good teacher. She wont hold your hand but I have heard good things about her and she subbed for a class the first time I took Nurs 100.

@Reign- I got in too! Ill be starting in the Fall as well Im so excited!! Thanks for your tips on here.

Here is what helped me. First of all, your teacher may say "Dont worry about this" or "Only study these pages" which is really helpful but for me, I had to keep in mind that everything in the book is fair play. EVERYTHING!! Ask anyone that took it before and they will tell you there are trickers on every test.

Second, Dont just focus on vocab, or just the chapter. I would read the chapter at least 4 times, then do flash cards with my vocab every chance I got, they were always in my Purse or backpack so if I was at the doctors or another class or anywhere I could study. That way I knew both the chapter and the vocab and could almost recite the info and explain the body system. Reign was right, you need to have someone you can tell this stuff too. Somehow saying it out loud really solidifies it.

I would agree that 95 wont cut it. I ended up with a 98.5. I know someone that ended up with a low 96 and missed it. You need to shoot for perfect. You can have one or two low scores but the rest need to make up for it.

To all my other mommies out there, I took this class with three other classes (I need a full load for financial aid) and two BABIES at home. My son was 4 months when I started and my daughter, 2 years. And I ended up with As and Bs in my other classes and made it into the program. It is totally possible. I would do flashcards while breastfeeding at 4am. The trick is, figure out what works for you.

Good luck to everyone on here. The trick to this class is studying. If you study it hard core, the tests are easy. You need to know the math. It comes up at the beginning of the semester and if you don't know it, it will effect most of the rest of your pharm tests. If you want to be a nurse, math is just part of the job. feel free to email me or message me about anything!

@busybee

The hours are Mon and Tues 645-5(ish) and that will be the same all year. Its the hours for lecture. W TH F are clinical days and they can be anything. Just depends on what clinical sites they get. So for the first 4 weeks for us starting in fall its W and F 645-5 on campus then after that itll change, and itll change every 8 weeks. AND you have no choice about your schedule. You get what you get. When I asked the department about even just requesting a shift they said "Our answer is if youre not happy with your clinical shifts, youre welcome to find another program". Sooo yeah.

Pre-Req's for Chaffey VN are CNA, Anatomy (without lab) is the minimum, Math 401 (dosage and calculations), NURVN 201 (introduction into nursing) They dont require English (though I did my pre-reqs at another school and did my English) Chaffey is amazing, curriculum is tough, teachers are amazing and tough, and our facility is state of the art. We have more state of the art stuff then the ADN program does. Just let me know if you have more questions!!!

Hi, I was wondering what are the other requirements to get into the LVN program at chaffey. SO far I have completed Math 401. Thanks. :)

Thank you so much for this info! I started the NURS 100 in August with Williams. This is second time around because of my medical drama last year. It's tough I know the stuff but at test time I feel like I freeze or forget everything! I'm doing well, I just hope well enough. I started the pre-lvn class last week at Hacienda La Puente as well, so it's tough with both demanding and stressful classes on my plate. Plus the other class I'm taking at Mt. Sac. The math is just not sticking and I know these things already.

How do you like the LVN program and teachers? What is the feedback as far as the hospitals and Citrus students? I heard good things about Hacienda La Puente, I'm just so uneasy since it's an adult school rather than community college..plus I have all my other classes and would have liked to graduate with a nursing degree.

Any feedback would be great! I hope your doing well in your studies, hang in there!

MamaMama...what is your name? Which classmate of mine are ya? =) Buzybee..I love the program so far. We have just finished 8 weeks and took finals. All of us passed. I love all my classmates, we are a great group. All the teachers I love too. I am in clinicals 2 days a week now. Wed & Fri. The rest of the week, we are in class all day. We actually have every Thursday off, which is cool because we need that day to study. LOL The first 5-6 weeks you are basically learning and preparing to go to a clinical site and work with actual patients. Alot of reading and hands on stuff in the labs. I have learned so much in just 8 weeks, its crazy. Be prepared for 3-4 tests per day all week long. If you think Nursing 100 was a lot, you are in for a surprise. I study constantly, and have no time for anything else. I dont sleep much anymore either. I never thought a brain could learn and retain so much information in such a short time. I am in from 6:45am to around 5 or 6pm each night. No joke, you spend all your time at school and the classmates become your immediate family. LOL =) Just remember how much you want that nursing career, and its doable. I work so hard that at the end of the day I feel really proud of myself. Its a great feeling. You will mature so much in the program, you will learn that you are actually really responsible and organized, because you have no choice but to be, if you want to make it. Time is flying by, it feels like just yesterday I started. So, 10 months is quick and painful LOL but with a great reward in the end. Graduation and getting that license!! Remember to stay confident in yourself, open yourself up to learning so much, and believe that YOU can do it. Dont doubt yourself. Good Luck...

In the math part of the LVN pre-req course at citrus,

what does it involve (i.e, calculations, algebra, etc)??

Hi, I was wondering what are the other requirements to get into the LVN program at chaffey. SO far I have completed Math 401. Thanks. :)

Does the LVN program at Chaffey take 40 students out of 250 like Citrus?

~or~

Hm, are those (NURVN401/MATH/BIO424) like the NURS100 at Citrus but just taken when you want?

I really want to take the LVN program, I'm just not sure which school would be best for me.

I know Citrus is highly competitive & with there "pre-course", as I'd like to call it, sort of doubting myself if i can or cant do it. On the other hand, I see Chaffey & see the pre-reqs, and think okay I can do this if I start taking courses (NURVN401/MATH/BIO424) now so by the time the LVN program start I will be ready.

Ahh..Sorry for the many questions, I just have a lot on my mind hehe :)

oh and one more question:

where are the clinical sites for citrus college lvn program?
