Choosing PMHNP program

Published

Assuming acceptance into all of the schools I applied to (I doubt it lol but fingers crossed anyway!!), how do you make your decision about which one to go to??

All of the schools are online and I have to find my preceptor for all of them.

The tuition pretty much ranges from $20,000- $40,000 for the entire program, not including books, out of state travel, etc.

Most of the schools are state universities so I think most of their reputations are ok.

Do you narrow it by cost? Or by location? How did any of you narrow down which program to go to?

University of North Dakota

University of Southern Alabama (heard some bad things on here about this program)

University of Alabama Birmingham

Eastern Kentucky University

Wilkes University (not responsive to phone calls/emails so far)

Drexel University (most expensive one)

St Louis University

Health Assessment- Seidel's guide to physical examination (ISBN-9780323112406)

Patho- Understanding Patho. (ISBN- 9780323078917)

Thank you very much!!

How do you study patho and health? I know you are not taking this class, but do they provide students with video and power points for lecture since it is online? Sorry to have too many questions.

No problem! Good luck!!

Not too many power points. Mostly just read the text and get tested on it. In health assessment there are a bunch of videos too. We also do assessments on an online virtual patient in Shadow Health (of each body system). I'm definitely learning a lot but most of it is self taught.

Thank you very much for your info. It really helps. Talk to you soon:)

Hi again? I received a welcome packet yesterday. It said that we needed to find preceptors. Do I need a preceptor for health assessment class? If so, the preceptor should be medical related MD or NP. Right? Do you know by any chance how many preceptors do we need? I sent email to my adviser but no response. Please let me know if you have time

No preceptor for health assessment because there is an onsite clinical residency for that class. You need preceptors just for your clinical hours which would be in your last spring and fall semester. So not for a little while yet! :)

Thank you very much for your response. But, what do you mean by onsite clinical residency? I know we actually have to go to school for health assessment. I live in Utah....

You come to campus for a few days during Advanced Health Assessment. It's called an onsite clinical residency. We will meet with our professors and demonstrate a full assessment and things like that.

Oh I see!!. It makes sense now. How can I say thank you enough;) Do they respond your emails or questions well? I am frustrated. I sent email two people and no respond. I wonder how I can communicate later when I am in the program. Thank you taking your time responding my email.

Hi again? Are you in DNP program or MS program? I know there have been a lot of debates related to this topic, I am in MS program, RN to MSN and my coworker, PMHNP, said today that I might need DNP to become PMHNP. I called acnn and they said that they didn't require it now and haven't heard about it of course. It will take about more than two years for me to graduate. Do you know anything about it?
