It's performed often at my work, in a jail facility.
Other than the MLPs, I only know of one nurse who performs it. The others seem to think it is not within our scope of practice. Can anyone enlighten me on this, I work in Arizona...:innerconf,
Tnx bunches,

Well, this is what I found on the Arizona BON site, don't know if it helps of not.

I forgot, they also have a email thing that you can email them questions, NC BON doesn't, at least not one that is this easily accessible, so I envy you guys, lol.

Tnx Criss,
I suppose I should have been more specific. Can we perform this to a male patient? Some seem to believe it is an invasive procedure that is beyond our scope. I didn't have any luck on my AZBON site, but perhaps I missed it :Crash:,

"invasive" hmm,.are you allowed to draw blood? Are you allowed to place a foley cath? I've never worked in a prison,..but I've done these swabs millions of times in a hosp and Dr office, really not a big deal.

in Jarvis (Physical Exam and Health Assessment) she states that during the inspection and palpation of the member to compress the glans; if there is urethral discharge then collect a smear for microscopic examination and a culture. Sounds like it would be expected to collect the swab.
