Chiropractor to FNP

Nursing Students NP Students

Updated:   Published

Hey everyone, I need some advice concerning a new online BSN and FNP program. This program is allowing RN's and chiropractors direct entry into their BSN program. After one year the student will sit for their boards and if they pass, they continue with the NP Program for one year. The program is through Mid America and Hardin-Simmons University in Texas.

I have been a chiropractor for 11 years and I am looking to leave the profession. I am planning to go back to school to become a NP or PA. I am a little concerned about the online BSN and NP Program. Is a student adequately trained by an online course compared to learning in a classroom? You have some hands on training and you have to go through your rotations, but I am not convinced the student is ready to care for patients without more on the job training.

My goal as an NP or PA is to work in orthopedics or emergency medicine. How many NP's work as first assistants in the OR or the the ER? While I am taking some prerequisites classes, I am planning to get my paramedic certification and get some experience outside of the chiropractic field.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I am transitioning to nursing practice away from chiropractic because my job hurts. Philosophically chiropractic is awesome, but painful. I takes so much strength to adjust some of these people. On point about WBU, wow, they have been incredible. They, the admin, has back tracked on so much policy. One student did not do any of thier pre requisits until the third quarter when the evaluations went out. The admin staff are letting this person finish the pre req's before they graduate! I delayed the program 3 quarters getting the extra course work done! But what are we to do! The clinicals have been a lot of fun and my classmates are great. I think we have built some great comradery.

Has anyone started or finished the Midwest program at WB? If so, are you going to work as an RN first or start the NP program?

Is there any truth to the rumors of NP requiring a doctorate by 2015?

Thanks,

are you asking about the BSN program from MidAmerica. That is the program I am doing. I is still nursing school with clinicals. I am planning on working locally as an RN before starting NP/PA school in Fall 13

Docteri I would love to know more about the program, please PM me when you get a chance.

Hey Chiro-Ann!

Your post was extremely helpful. I'm in Chiropractic school right now, completing my clinical internship. I've been searching and searching for online programs, that would make sense, but could not come up with anything. The Texas school unfortunately is no longer offering advanced standing to Chiropractors. Can you explain how you are accomplishing the NP in more detail? Which schools will accept a Chiropractor and how you are saving so much money? I appreciate your time greatly, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected] Thanks again!

Hi medstjean,I am at a junior college for my RN which I graduate from this Dec! It's cheap tuition. In Jan I will start my online RN-bsn degree, again at a cheap state university. After that I will do my family or acute care NP online. I have zero desire to rack up student loans so while my method will take 6-7 years in total, I can pay as I go. Also, don't forget hospital pay fora percentageof RN- BSN and np.
