I worked there a number of years ago, and found the unit to be poorly staffed and poorly managed. The education program for the NICU was excellent, and I learned a lot working there, just never got to take a break, eat a meal, enjoy a reasonable patient assignment, or take a day off without being called to come in. I don't think I was the only one with that impression, as there was something of an "exodus" of staff from the unit as other NICUs opened in the area. The pay at Children's Mercy was also significantly lower than other area hospitals.
I would check out the working conditions VERY THOROUGHLY before accepting a job.
Despite these drawbacks, there were some very talented and dedicated RNs, NNPs, and physicians there, and the patients did receive good care.

Thanks for your input and your honesty!!! I will look carefully into it, thanks again!

I only did clinicals there, and it was horrible. The staff was rude and very clique-ish. I don't know if it was because the majority of the staff was in their early 20's or what. All the people I know who worked there, have left...and they don't speak highly of the experience.
The pay is a lot lower than all other places in KC. I would definitely research it thoroughly before you make your choice.
Good luck!

Thanks Jolie. It is a NICU contract that they are offering. I will call and see which facility it is at.

This topic is a little old but I figured I'd reply anyway. I just started in the NICU at Children's this month and I love it! The nursing staff is mostly on the younger side and I am not but I haven't run into any problems concerning that so far.
