Chest Tube dressings

I currently work on a step down surgical unit and we currently use xeroform around our pleural chest tubes to keep any air leaks from occurring. The only problem we are experiencing, when using the xeroform, is not being able to stay around chest tube insertion site after ambulating patients. I appreciate any input or suggestions to address this current problem. If you use any other materials for pleural chest tubes I would appreciate any feedback.

When I used to take care for thoracic surgeons all we used was ABD pads and 4x4s. The surgeons said there was no need for xeroform.

We use the same in the CVICU and have absolutely no problems.

i use vaseline gauze to wrap around the tubes then i use 4x4s under and above the tubes then another 4x4 to cover the other 4x4s. i like to use no-sting barrier wipes then use paper tape.

We also just use 4 X 4's.

Bio-occolusives, Tegaderm, Op-site whatever you have does a really good job and gives you direct visualization of the site. You can add a little vaseline guaze just around the point of entry if it makes you feel better. Plus you can secure it all the way down the patient's side if you want.
