Chemistry

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I've never taken chemistry and I'm really nervous about it. This is the class description: "Introductory course open to students without previous background in chemistry. Introduction to the nature of atoms and molecules, chemical notation, scientific reasoning and problem solving in the study of the theory and applications of inorganic chemistry."

I have 2 friends who have taken it at my school and have already offered to tutor me, so I definitely will be going to them for assistance once the quarter begins. Before the quarter begins, I plan to prepare by brushing up on my algebra skills. Should I also review biology?

I'd love to hear your favorite chemistry studying techniques, tips, and any advice! Thank you.

First, this is HIGHSCHOOL Chemistry. This includes Gr 11 and Gr 12 material, these courses are usually a semester long. They can be used as refershers too.

Second, its PREP for General Chemistry which is at intro level.

Third, its important to note, it is for the most part, Inorganic Chemistry. Broadly Meaning chemistry that does not involve carbon-carbon bonds. Hydrogen is usually present but does have to be. i.e chloromethane. However, you cover organic (extremely basic; no rxn mechanisms).

As a nurse you most likely will not need any chem higher than highschool level. At least that i know of ( although I have presued the hard sciences including chem). They may include a clinical chem, which is NOT science based, very different btw. Esp with regards to labs.

Rest assure chemistry at the highschool level in my opinion is fun.. Yes work of course but very enjoyable.

Your ref to reviewing bio tells me you may just be starting out in the sciences?? You DO NOT need to review bio at all.

Math however is huge in chemistry. Its not calculus but very basic algebria. No vectors like physics. You may benefit from reviewing vectors for quantum mechanics portion. They don't teach that btw its a hugh help for determining polarity ;).

The best study tips are your own lol everyone studies differently. Just keep on top of the concepts its a breeze. Happy studying.

Specializes in Chemistry/Physics Teacher at a community college..

I teach Chemistry and physics at the community college level for both online and on-ground delivery. Here is what I tell my students: Never be afraid to ask questions and be sure to ask lots of questions. Seek tutoring from the tutoring/learning center.

I often have a good amount of students who are either intimidated or fearful of Chemistry. Perhaps they heard "horror" stories? This was one reason behind the changes I made to my courses. All of my courses are now open notes, open book, open internet. Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other and to consult knowledgeable people (I.e., tutors, teachers, siblings, etc.) while doing the tests. quizzes, and final exam. There is no time limit on doing the quizzes, tests, and final since that puts unnecessary pressure on students.

I made the changes above since science education research shows that students learn the material better, get higher grades, and retain it longer as compared to the traditional closed book, closed notes approach.
