So, I took a mini quiz on Chapter 2 of the Tortora book which is chemical organization. I got 11 out of 15. I just don't understand chemistry. Is there any helpful hints out there? How much of nursing school, etc. based on chemistry at that level? I am kind of freaked out. I know the teacher will drop two of the lowest scores, but I really want to be able to understand it. We have a second test next week on the second part which is more lipids, carbs, etc.
I really need to do good in this class. I want to be a nurse so bad I can taste it. Any helpful hints you can give me would be appreciated.
I also need some guidance on the tissues under the microscopes. Our teacher is a stickler for giving it to you in either 10 or 40 and you have to place, describe it and name it. Thanks!

Hi Nancy,
I am using the same A&P book by Tortora so I'd be really happy if we can help one another. I am very nervous about Chap. 3 and luckily my Prof. said we don't need to read Chap. 2 w/the Chem but we still need to know it very well for the entire duration of the 2 semesters. Yikes Please pm and we can talk about our studying more.
Here is a really great site for Histology that I found earlier from another poster on Allnurses. It is www.histology-world.com/photo...ls.php?album=1 I think this site is tremendously good to help us prepare for our Lab practicals. Looking forward to talking to you again!

Thank you both. I will respond more later. But it is good to know that there are some out there that are having the same problem. The ones I messed up on are the covalent bonds, extra electrons and the PH, which I put H atoms rather than ions and negative feedback. The question was the cold draft causing a person to shiver. I put negative, but the answer was positive? I don't get it.
Thanks!!
I don't have a PM name/login? Any info there, I would love to "study" with you guys.
Our teacher is so big on chem that she has divided Chp 2 into three weeks! Wow!
Thanks for the Histology website. I think I have a good handle on it, but it should be interesting when she introduces it to us on the test!

We skipped chapter 2 of the Tortora book in my ap1 (this past summer).
Honestly.. it didn't make or break my foundation for the rest of the class.
I haven't had chemistry since soph year in hs, like 7 years ago.
I'm taking chem 1 now solely to help with pharmacology but I don't think it helps all that much with ap... that is unless you have a psychotic professor like me who thinks chemistry should be a prerequisite (only one at my school like so..)
If you think you really need the help that bad.. get an intro to chem book.. like the dummies series. Or better yet (and free) google for chemistry lecture notes.
Chemistry classes are very geared towards physical chemistry and don't really help with biological sciences unless it's an organic or biochem class.
The Tortora text is amazing in my opinion, I absolutely love my book and this it's the best choice for any ap class.
Keep reading it over and write it out.. talk it out.
My biology teacher said the brain can only read something so many times until it expects the next thing (like watching the same movie or reading the same book back to back)...she said you actually have to THINK and IMAGINE what is going on. Like read it.. but the book down and just think it over.
I don't know if that helps you but worth a go.
I can tell you right now that you need to get good study habits down pat immediately. I'm having trouble learning massive amounts of information (the endocrine system in depth, I didn't know I was in med school for endocrinology .. ponders..) but that maybe just my stupid professor.
Also, sometimes the quizzes in the tortora book are a little wacked. Like in my ap1 class, we didn't pick up every penny in the book.. the quizzes do.
