Chemistry & Anatomy help :\

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Were studying bit of chemistry in my anatomy class and chemistry is not my best subject.

I'm having few difficulties with some questions will someone be able to help me out bit?

List the 3 subatomic particles found in atoms, the charge & location of each.

1.) How are electrons arranged around the nucleus

2.) What are 2 types of chemical bonds

3.) Formula for : Sodium atom and a chlorine atom

4.) Which atom becomes a positive ion?

5.) Which atom becomes a Negative ion?

6.) What is the function of an enzyme in a chemical reaction?

7.)Why are enzymes important in the human body

8.) What is the sum total of all reactions in the human body called?

Okay, let me see if I can help you with this.

The subatomic particles in an atom are protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus of the atom, and the electrons are outside of the nucleus in the electron cloud. Protons are positive, neutrons are neutral, and electrons have a negative charge.

Two types of chemical bonds are ionic bonds and covalent bonds.

The formula for Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is Na+ plus Cl- (so sodium, Na, is the positive ion and Chlorine, Cl, is the negative ion). Sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl) on their own are elements in the periodic table, but when combined, they form the compound Sodium Chloride (NaCl).

Enzymes are important because they catalyze chemical reactions in the body (speed them up).

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Did your professor assign a workbook to go with your text? That should make your life so much easier. Also go to the publisher's (of your main text) website. There should be scads of study aids there that will help you absorb what you need to learn.

Chemistry isn't my subject either!

Here's some help:

1. Electrons are arranged in "Valance Shells" around the nucleus. The shells themselves want 8 Electrons in them to feel "complete".

2. 2 Types of Chemical Bonds:

-Covalent Bonds- (sharing an elctron. Niether atom loses or gains an electron)

-Ionic Bonds-(one atom loses an electron, one gains one)

3.Someone has already answered this way better than I could of!

4. The atom that loses an electron becomes a positive ion (more protons than neutrons)

5. The atom that gains an electron becomes a negative ion (more electrons than protons)

6. An enzyme acts as a catalyst (a tool) to speed up chemical reactions in the body.

7. Enzymes are important to the body because some chemical reactions would take years to happen without the use of enzymes. They NEVER change in a chemical reaction, and can be re-used (never become a part of the product)

8. The sum of all chemical reactions in the body is known as (your) Metabolism.

Hope this helps and good luck!! :wink2:

hey there,

i made one little change. a positive ion has more protons than electrons this is because protons are positive and electrons are negative so if there are more more +'s than -'s it's positive.

neutrons are like switzerland...completely neutral, they never get involved in positive and negative squabbles :)

peace,

You did get the textbook for the class, right? All those should be covered in there fairly early in the book.

Thanks for your help. and no at the moment i do NOT have a text book because our school is currently short on books for the class, and their still in the process of getting them ordered/shipped.

So my teacher told me look with someone else, which i don't have his phone number. so I'm forced to do most of the research online :\

Surely you can buy the book somewhere other than through your school. Try Amazon.
