Chem, MicroB and Anat 1& 2 HOW HARD???

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Seasons Greetings to ALL-

I am a (NY) SUNY student meeting the pre req's for Nursing-

How hard is CHEM, MICROB, ANAT 1& 2 what should I look forward to? Im taking Anat I in the spring-

Which would you suggest I take over the summer? Micro b- or Chem?

Any tips- advice- study tools- anything- all will be greatly appreciated- I got a PDA for christmas- anything worth dl- to study?

Thanks to all that reply-

XO

I pretty much agree with everyone else! A&P and Microbiology are a lot of memorization. I took two chemistry classes in High School (when I had dreams of being a chemical engineer----what was I thinking?). I remember Chemistry feeling more like a math class than anything else though.

which should I take first in your opinion, any one's opinion.

The first session is June 1- July 1 and second is July 5- August 5-

there goes my summer but I dont mind! All advice is truly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!!

Fall will be A& P 2.

I know at my school, they recommend taking Chem before micro. It's not a pre req, but they seem to think it helps to have a basis in chem.

At my school Chem is required first (chem, A&P I, A&P II, then Micro) but I don't think it made a difference for me. Go with the time that is best for you.

Interesting that your school actually suggest in order-

mine doesnt-

so Im doing

A& P 1 in the spring ( now)

Chem for summer session 1

MicroB for summer session 2

A& P 2 in the fall

wish me luck!

I have ordered the flashcards and :dummies: books for A&P-

Thanks for the fast feedback!!

you guys/gals are Great!!

Organic Chem helped me with micro.. so, I would suggest that first...

actually, once I start taking my biologies, I have to take them in sequence. So, my next 5 quarters look like this:

spring: organic chem

summer: cell biology

Fall: A&P I

Winter: A&P II

Spring: Microbiology

Then, hopefully, into the ADN program for Fall or Winter '05

I took anatomy, then chem & micro-b together, now tomorrow I start the second level chem & physiology, then clinicals in the fall. At my school, everyone takes physiology their last semester before clinicals. In facr, it isn't even offered in the fall. Our counselors want us to have at least the first level of chem & anatomy first. Anatomy & physiology are two completely separate courses here. Can't take phys before antatomy.

Cali and mrsmoo- thanks- I will do chem. FIRST, Then microB, both over the summer-

Im not taking ORGANIC though- Im taking CHM 285 Physiological Chemistry

Our courses are combined A& P 1 & 2

Im getting ready for school- (Jan 26)

going to start NEW Studying techniques

thanks to all of you great people on this board!

Thanks for the input and goodluck to all!!

Hey Dietrying- goodluck and is there a nursing future/need in seattle, wa?

We were thinking of relocating there.

( I LOVE THE RAIN TOO)

:) :D

This is all very interesting. We have a strict order in which we have to take our pre-reqs, so you tend to see the same dumb people class after class! You know, the ones that never listen and ask a question five minutes after the instructor just answered an identical question from another student. Anyways, our order is:

1. Intro to Chemistry

2. Anatomy

3. Physiology

4. Microbiology

During this time we have to take English 1 and Intrapersonal Communications before we can even set foot into the Nursing office to apply. Even then, we still have to have high school transcripts, HESI results, all the works in hand to even see somebody. I wish it was a little more lenient like some of the schools you guys are in.

I don't think its necessary, but I do think that a basic understand of chemistry is *helpful* for any and all science classes you take after that since so many of them have a foundation in basic chemistry.

I didn't find them to be as hard as everyone told me they would be. I absolutely LOVED chemistry. My friends who are ahead of me in school had advised me to take Micro in the summer. I took it in the spring only because it was the only class I had left to take, but it could have definitely been done in the summer and probably would have been easier. It's pretty boring (IMO) and you have to go to lab twice a week anyway in the regular semester because of the growth rate of the cultures. My hubby took A&P 2 in the summer and made an A, but he said he didn't feel like he learned and retained as much as he would've if he took it in a regular semester. I took A&P 2 and Chemistry together with a psych. class in a regular semester and had no problems with that. The dimensional analysis you learn in chemistry is VERY beneficial in the first semester of nursing school when you are learning dosage calculations and IV drip rates. I found that the students in my first semester who did well in chemistry did better than the other students on the dosage calculation exam. So my advice is to pay close attention and keep up with the studying in chemistry. A&P 1 is harder than 2 in my opinion, only because the info you are learning is brand new to you. A&P 2 is easier because you already laid the foundation by taking the first one, and you should be able to manage another science class while taking A&P 2. Hope this helps and good luck!

We have to take our prereq's in order also

Chem

A&P I

A&P II

A&P III

and Microbiology may be taken concurrently with A&P II or A&P III

I'm taking Chem (general, organic and biochem combined) spring along with 2 other classes, A&P I summer, II fall and III and micro winter...hmmm maybe I'll do mirco and II for fall. (have an hour commute to the school....how does online A&P work)

I'm open to ANY help or suggestions too..I feel intimidated
