NO i dont think any state allows challenging the RN boards. Having been licensed as a LPN and working the position for 8 years before becoming an RN, i dont know that any LPN could challenge boards and pass them.
Lpn critical thinking is completely different than an RN. And it takes a few months even after passing RN boards to truely think like a RN after being a LPN for so long. Clinicals start the process, but it isnt really completed until after you are working the position.
I also wonder about the instructors you talk about, because most instructors have to have actively worked in the nursing role to become instructors. A lot will work on a per-diem basis on a hospital unit or nursing home (if nothing else to keep their skills current). So maybe you arent really aware that they do actively practice.
