New Overtime Rules

Specialties CRNA

What is everyones understanding regarding how the new overtime rules will ultimately affect salaried anesthetists who earn > 100k and work significant overtime? I can't seem to make sense of the new law as it pertains to us.

Specializes in ICU.

This thread has been "split" so that posts answering the original question were left in - all others have been removed. Please keep this on topic i.e. how will the new laws affect CRNA's and AA's. If you want to discuss the politics of the new law there is at least one thread on the subject in the activism forum.

And remember - please debate the topic and not the person.

Hi-This law is mandatory here in the USA for the past 50 Years-I refer you to check this out for veracity in the Federal Registry-This law was all the doing of George Bush 2 and his business buddies! Vote Kerry 2004-he stated publicly he will roll it back with the stroke of a pen. Vote Kerry 2004 and send Dubya(bush) back to his texas ranch where hopefully he won't harm the cows. Nurses inform yourself politically-don't rely on watercooler hearsay--:chuckle Vote Kerry 2004!

You are mistaken. Again - as PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES, CRNA's and AA's are generally considered to be EXEMPT, and have been all along. I'm not talking about RN's, LPN's, nurses aides, or any other person in this discussion.

And again, the free market works for anesthetists. The demand far outstrips the supply, and in many areas, particularly large metropolitan areas, anesthetists often have their choice of several positions. Employers can either keep up or not. The choice, and the consequences, are theirs.

Yes, this is the explanation that I have received. There never was any requirement on the part of our employers to pay us overtime. Rather, it has always been market driven. Therefore, the new law does not apply to salaried exempt anesthetists. If my employer suddenly said that they are going to stop paying overtime, then I am free to go across town to someone who will.

although job mobility makes good sense and is a viable option, there are times when differing employers will band together. ie noone in town will pay ot. then youre looking a little farther out to find it.

John Kerry/John Edwards went on public record stating "They will overturn this law if they are elected-It can be done with the stroke of a pen. Vote Kerry 2004!!:)

From what I understand on the politics between these 2 candidates is yes, "W" passed the overtime law but may not be so bad compared to Kerry's philosphy on give half your money to the poor right off the top because that is the only way it is fair. Well gee, here is my money because I am sorry that I was an overachiever and wanted to make something of my life whereas somebody can sit on their porch and just watch the money come to them without having to put in any effort whatso ever. The reason why I hate politics and many politicians is for that matter. Seems like they always say things to get elected and line their campaign pockets at the same time. Anyways, I will get off of my soap box and go to sleep...I obviously need it..getting cranky.
