CDE Salary

My nurse manager was very careful to tell me that completing a certification program did not entitle me to a raise. But then she went ahead and had the job reclasssified as a nurse clinician position. I believe I got a raise of about $1.50/hr. However, after the reclassification, I am now a salaried employee.

Earnings will depend a lot on geographic location and if you are working in a hospital. PM me if you want to discuss.

I am still a nursing student; however, last year I worked at a local clinic that had a nurse who was a CDE. Her entire scope of work was developing and teaching both adult and pediatric diabetics. I didn't ask her how much she made, but I did inquire whether that certification boosted her salary. She chucked and said "no".

hi there i am currently a nursing student in central florida and we happen to talk about cde salaries today because we were learning about diabetes. i was amazed to see what they pay in other places because my professor stated that she knows many nurses who are working for endocrinologists and are making $75.00- $85.00 an hour. she stated that endocrinologists love to hire rn's who are cde certified because they cover about 75% of what he/she has to do with their diabetic patients therefore, taking a huge load off of them. she said the hours are great for anyone with families and you make more in 20 hours what you would working full time. she also stated there are cde's who work for more than one doctor and make amazing money!!!

i just realized this is an older thread...but $75-$85 dollars an hour????? i am a nurse practitioner cde and don't make anywhere near that! that's more than 175k per year! if that were true anywhere at all, we wouldn't have so many cde rn and np openings! i wish it were true...definitely cdes cover much (if not all) of the necessary info that people with diabetes need on an ongoing basis to manage their disease process. as nurses, we diagnose and treat the response to disease, and diabetes affects every aspect of our patient's lives. this is why diabetes is so uniquely suited to a nurse practitioner clinic.

before i became an np, my role as a cde was a diabetes nurse clinician (expanded role rn). i received no raise when i passed my cde exam, as this was already supposed to be reflected in my salary. the registered dietitians and social workers with whom i work do get a $1/hour raise when they pass the cde exam. better than nothing, but not even in the ballpark of the numbers indicated by the above poster's professor.

Salaries will depend on the market. In our area a CDE working in the hospital setting earns about what a nurse manager would get. They are exempt employees, so no hourly range. The real advantage (to me) is the hours.

cde salaries in south florida are similar to those of nurse clinicians, endocrinologists here are more likely to hire arnps. are the nurses working as independent contractors? we bought a vacation/retirement home in ormond beach last year and will be relocating. i'd love to talk to your instructor. please pm me if she is willing to give any more specific information.

I have colleages that make in the 80's. I work for an indigent population, barely making 72K, but have more flexibility. I can always do private practice to supplement, but never seem to have the time.

When you work with Endos if they are attach to a hospital you are subject to the hospital salary caps. For a large private practice group of Endos doing trials and lots of CGM procedures, then I could see the higher salaries but is more unstable.

Companies like Innovex could start at 75K. A senior CDE for large DME's companies you can start in the 150's, but requirements are very strict(5 year CDE's need not apply) and professional recluters are almost always involved.

I make a dollar more an hour than I would if I worked the floor. That's it. No 75k, just a dollar for the certification.

I have a feeling those big salaries are without benefits and no guaranteed hours. That is what we do with our CDE. However, she gets work in other facilities. I don't want the bother. With travel and expenses and paying own insurance, etc she does not clear what I do (per recent conversation)
