Hey all,
I'm a male nurse who was just currently hired at a level one trauma center in Denver (I just graduated a few weeks ago). I learned through the head of critical care about a new program for new grads that would be a 12 week intensive classroom/lab simulation training. It sounds like it is relatively new and I would be a guinea pig. Has anyone heard of this? I am going to apply for it, but I did some simulation lab work during school and I was not quite sure if it was worth my while. If I complete the program I get to orient for about half the time I would normally. Any opinions?

Moving your thread to a more appropriate forum for it.
It sounds like a wonderful idea to me and would suggest that you accept it if that is where you wish to work. These lab simulators are actually quite excellent and will give you a good solid orientation before you start out with real patients. There are so many procedures to learn and read about and this is place where you can hone your skills and that will be to your advantage.
This program is also going to require quite a bit of outside work on your own as well, you will be going home and reading every night so expect that.
I say go for it, if you need more time afterwards, I am sure that they will give it to you. Suspect that this will be just fine for you as well.
Best of luck to you.

Your sim lab critical care training will be different than what you had in nursing school. You'll get to play around with mock codes, practice intubating, learn different rhythms, and what to do about them, etc. It'll be fun and informative- I highly recommend it.
Sweet! I am currently applying for it so hopefully I will get it. =] They only take about a dozen people.
Good luck to you! Don't hesitate to let them know just how much you want this when you apply.

Hi!
I just read your post and I am a new grad in Denver as well, I am also applying for a similar position (CCU fellowship)....I am wondering if you actually took it and by now probably finished, what you thought about it! any advice?
thanks
What hospital are you doing your fellowship through? I complete the 12 week program over the Summer through Swedish Medical Center. There were aspects that did need improvement, but overall I feel it was a great experience. If your going through the same program many of the problems I had are being fixed based of the Summer group, so the fellowship will most likely be even more helpful.
So basically, my advice would be to apply for it. I am currently in my sixth week of orientation and except for weak areas, i.e charting and taking orders, I feel I am progressing rapidly. My critical thinking skills are definitely advanced compared to most new grads. Good luck and let me know what you decide to do. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me.
