CCM EXam, Questions and Tips

:confused: I'm going to be taking the CCM Exam for the first time this Fall, and would like to hear from those who have taken it; i.e. what study materials (if any), did you find useful, and which areas of the test were the hardest? Thanks!:wink2:

Hi, there was very little on payor sources, one on medicaid and one on medicare, and I don't recall any other.

I having lurking in this site for a few weeks now. I took the CCM exam today and PASSED! I used "A Case Managers Study Guide Preparing For Certification" by Denise Fattorusso 3rd edition" to study. But, in my opinion it did not help much. I spent many hours studying and I felt it did not prepare me. The questions on the exam were very general and I never felt that I was absolutely sure of my answers. I will tell you there were a lot of questions on the ADA and HIPAA. There were a few on UR and Medicare. Of all the study questions that I did from the study guide and on the free Dr. Linton, I only recognized one question. There were also a few questions about reporting abuse, and consent. My best advise is to give is to think like a case manager when you answer the questions. Best wishes to all!

I am taking it tomorrow, and i failed once in July. Did you remember any complementary therapy questions and any special programs that are weird and you never heard before? Last time they asked me a question on Yoga and electrical pulsing therapy. Did you see questions on psychosocial issues?

topics were motivational interviewing, methadone, code of conduct - taping of session between client and case manager and another question, long-term care/payment, part a medicare coverage, definition of disabilty according to ada, definition of tpa, definition of collaberation - very few laws.

  • hipaa/state law. does hipaa supersede state laws?
  • methadone is treatment for which drug? answers: heroine? cocaine? alcohol,
  • what does conflict give in communication? i put it identifies there is a problem that needs resolution.
  • when is it okay to tape record an initial assessment? answers: with verbal permission of pt, with written permission of pt, never, .....
  • purpose of disease mgt
  • pt with chronic illness, a family is taught to care for pt. what will the happen. answers: family member might be isolated, will give force others in family to be involved in care, etc.
  • difference between skilled care and subacute. answers: higher patient/nurse ratios, long term placement available, etc
  • a couple of questions on culutral competence: what the cm should do in respect t a person's culture
  • tbi ( couple of questions) ..... one uses rancho scale
  • something about the doctors to use for pt with problems with periphal neuropathy

You have a good memory, I tried to remember some of the questions ver batum, and I couldn't.

How long does it take to get the official results? Is it really taking 4-6 weeks?

on all questions that i provided i am not sure they are the right answers. i listed all possible choices that i remember. in some, i gave my answer b/c i could not remember the others. please only use as a guide and look up answers. i have no way of knowing which ones i answered correctly.

yes it still takes 4-6 weeks to get the official letter, cert number and ccm pin. But your name should be in the database within two weeks. If you dont see it, call ccmc up

Just finished taking the CCM exam; prelim PASS!!!:) I was a little concerned because I specialize in Perinatal CM, but I studied early,often-A LOT, have a lot of experience in OR (encompassing med-surg & medical conditions), & help write reviews when I have time,for med-surg.

I studied "Secrets of the CCM Exam", and I typed a study guide(from there) of paraphrasing main & sub topics, to a printable copy for "any time" review. Thus, reading, typing, printing, & reviewing the basics helped me a lot.

I "lurked" on this site yesterday,having Googled all the "free pre test sites" I could find. The advice on this site here was invaluable. (Didn't have time to sign up officially until today; good site!)

The best advice was to simply use your common sense, read the questions & answers well, and as one participant observed, answer according to your true (case manager's" perspective. Which, you wouldn't be there if you didn't (really) know how to do so.

I am a fast & usually not too nervous test taker, and true to form, I finished in an hour & 15 minutes. Then I went back and finished the ones I had "marked", went through every question, and only ended up changing 2 or 3. (One I knew for sure I had answered incorrectly, on closer reflection).

My advice is to focus on CM function, communication methods, some rehab, Rancho los Amigos, payment/payer models,some ethics. Very little (on this version of test) pathophysiology, a little on informed consent, a little on Medicare/Medicaid. Mostly, methods of communication,negotiation, and client needs.

Good luck! Such a relief to have this behind me. Now back to life.
