Hi All!

We can start applying tomorrow and the the deadline is August 15.

I am all done with my pre-reqs and co-reqs, so am excited to get this application process rolling. I am going tomorrow to meet with an advisor to be sure all of my ducks are in a row.

Anyone else out there applying?

So amazingly helpful! So, if I am reading it right, there were four books in that box and some of them came with cds as well?

Update for me fellow bargain hunters :) #1 I couldn't get that 25% of coupon to work for me on Amazon. I went ahead today and bought all of my books online after doing some comparison shopping. I have so far, not bought the tote ($170) or the ATI codes ($300).

I purchased all of my books new. 3 of them trough Amazon and 6 of them thru ValoreBooks.com.

So I have been working on this for the last 2.5 hours comparing prices and making sure that I wasn't missing any books. I recommend you do your own research, but this is at least a comparison if some of you are interested on how much money you can save buying from some place other than the book store. If I didn't mess up, all of the books with access codes, I ordered new so that I can get these codes. There are a couple of books that I ordered the "alternate/international" version of. I did some research into this, and feel comfortable buying these versions. I'll post a some information below about what these textbooks are. I am really pinching pennies this go round. I still have student loan debt from my bachelors degree 10 years ago and I am looking to save money wherever possible. Good luck on your searches everyone!

[h=3]Why are international edition textbooks priced lower than US edition textbooks and what are the differences between an international edition textbook and a US edition textbook?[/h]

Publishers make two different versions of textbooks because Americans are willing to pay the price for a hardcover book whereas in other countries the demand for the hardcover books is not high enough so they publish the same books in a softcover version with the exact same content.

Then, publishers modify the external appearance of international edition books slightly from the American versions in order to discourage American students from buying the lower priced international edition. Before we got into the business of selling international edition books to American students, we research international edition textbooks to determine if American students would be satisfied with the international editions. And, now, we have entered the business because we have found that, yes, Americans will be satisfied with the international editions because it is the same book, with the same content: it is just the presentation that is altered. The differences are VERY insignificant. Here are the only modifications that we have found publishers use for international editions: soft cover instead of hard cover, black and white diagrams instead of colored, different photographs on the cover page, and a label that says "international edition". Note: only some of these modifications occur for a given international edition textbook. For example, there are many international edition textbooks with color diagrams. Quite honestly, we haven't found a single person who regretted purchasing an international edition textbook.

  • Here are some real quotes that we found online when researching reviews about international edition textbooks:
    • "The only difference is that they say 'international edition' in little print on the cover."
    • "The cover may look different but the book content is 100% the same, page by page, word for word."

    • "The past three years I have only used international editions, everything is the same, except the paper cover instead of a hardcover. I will never go back to hardcover again, unless they come down to the price of the international edition. I would highly suggest international editions."
    • "I've bought several before, and the content was identical to that of my other classmates. The only real difference is that, as stated, it's paperback and says international edition"
    • "Do yourself a favor, buy the int version. You'll be happy that you've saved yourself all that money. The only difference is that it'll be in black and white, on thinner pages, in paperback form. These are the books they use in India and whatnot. I used one once, and it saved me a ton of money."

  • Is it legal to buy or sell international edition textbooks in the United States?
    • YES, it is perfectly legal.

  • What should you do when you are finished with the book?
    • We recognize that one important reason why students may think that it would be better to buy the American version is because then they believe they will be more likely to be able to sell it back online or at their college book store. However, we believe strongly that it is still better to purchase the international edition.
    • Consider:
      • 1) If you are able to sell your US edition on ebay/half/other then you are also very likely going to be able to sell your international edition at or around the same price. The demand for international edition textbooks in the US is growing because students are becoming more aware that the international edition textbooks are completely OK to use in place of the US editions. So, you may even be more likely to sell an international edition textbook online when you can offer it at a slightly lower price. Also, if you are selling your textbooks back to your college bookstore, you will likely do better selling them online at ebay or half (i.e. you can probably sell an international book for a higher price than your bookstore will buyback your used US edition textbook).
      • 2) Smaller loss if no demand for this textbook due to a new version being printed by the time you try to sell. So, purchasing the less expensive international edition textbook in the first place leads to lower costs.

Every time I try to look up my courses from the online book store, it says "course materials are being finalized" so not sure if they are making changes or what. At registration the book store lady got right in and it listed the books. Also, still don't see that I am registered yet, anyone else? I'm just worried cus when I went she said she just found out that I was coming (LPN) and also referred to me as an add on even though I called in and confirmed I was coming and have been since I got my acceptance letter. This is so disorganized and a joke it seems

Just so I am not confused, are the books that were listed on here for Boyce Campus too? Thanks for everything.

The books listed by goldschmitty that were in the "nursing package" are for the Allegheny Day program. Supposedly, different campus may have slightly different books. All of the books I bought, were for the Allegheny Day program.

Is anyone else worried about the math test we will be taking shortly after classes begin? I wish we had more info about it. If you don't pass it, I believe you're completely out.

What math test? I haven't heard of that. I don't think they can dismiss you because of a math test.

Linds,

at Cal's orientation we were told there would be a math test and you can only miss two if I remember correctly. Any more than that and you're out.

My best friend is already an RN.....she said its easy....they teach you how to do drug dosing and you have to apply it..... Its not super hard.
