Thought that this information would be helpful to any newly admitted students or anyone applying for a Spring 2014 seat and onward. They kind of blind sided us with the grading scale change mid program(they are known for this lol) so I thought it would be nice to share info so that new and future students are aware of the changes. (BTW I am an Allegheny Night student entering my last year this fall) Feel free to reply to the thread with any questions or comments about the program or changes. Sorry in advance for the formatting I copy and pasted from the original source.
*Grading Scale Change:
The Nursing Division has revised the current grading scale performance levels (Grading and Progression Guideline, Nursing Program Student Manual (NPSM)) to read as follows: Effective Fall 2013, all students (including new admissions) will need to achieve a minimum of 78% to pass all NUR courses. The complete revised grading scale will be as follows:
A 92-100
B 84-91
C 78-83
D 69-77
F 0-68
*Discontinuing Co-requisite Course Requirements:
Effective Fall 2013, the Nursing Division will discontinue the co-requisite course requirement for both NUR 110/NUR 120 and NUR 220/NUR 230. Henceforth, a student that fails one of these courses does not have to repeat or repay for the course they did not fail. Please note that the "student must reenter the program within 1 calendar year after the withdrawal or failure" from a course
*Admission Policy Change for LPN Entry:
Licensed Practical Nurses will be admitted directly into the first year, second semester which is NUR 130
(Basic Health Concepts for Nursing Practice) and NUR 140 (Evidenced Based Nursing Drug Therapy) without a transition course, effective Fall 2013. LPNs with a valid, current Pennsylvania License will be given 8 credits for their earned degree (prior learning) and will not have to take the following first year, first semester nursing courses: NUR 110 - Foundation/Health Promotion Concepts for Nursing Practice, 6 credits; and NUR 120 - Health Assessment Concepts for Nursing Practice, 2 credits.
*Nursing Admissions Point System Change:
The Nursing Admissions point system has changed and will impact the applications submitted July 1 through August 15, 2013 for Spring 2014 admissions and thereafter. The admission point system will continue to look at a student's points based on required admission GPA (2.8 minimum to 4.0) and additional admission points for taking Microbiology, A&P 1 and A&P 2. However, the newly adopted point system awards diminishing points for each course repeat attempt, as shown in the table below:

I had meant to post this under the Pennsylvania State Nursing programs area but I am not sure how to move my post. If there are any admins, Moderators etc. please feel free to move this over to the appropriate board.

Thank you for the info! On one hand it stinks that they raised the passing grade but on the other it's nice that you don't have to repeat passed courses.

Making it mandatory to pass ATI and changing the passing grade to 78% really weeds people out. They don't have much sympathy.
Laramyy, do you think it's really going to make that much of a difference?
Yes, I think so. It could, though, just encourage people to study harder. Hopefully that's what it will do.

I am applying for the Spring 2014 at Allegheny night/weekend. I was wondering jus how competitive admission seems. I have my BS in Microbiology and intended to do a second BS in nursing from Pitt but CCAC is much better money wise. I had a 3.0 from my undergrad and i finished A&P1 with an A. I will be taking A&P2 in the fall. I also heard some not so nice things about the program. How was your experience at allegheny and where were you placed for clinicals?

I applied to the spring 2014 program...having finished all my classes but the NUR ones...and A's/B's in my sciences...I met with the nursing coordinator today to just review my file to make sure that all my classes were good...my question is...when I first inquired about nursing at Ccac 1.5 years ago or so...I was told that my chemistry class from high school (chem com, chemistry in the classroom) would have been accepted. We only had lab a few times throughout the year...now today, I am being told that i will most likely be not eligible for the program in 2014 because it wasn't chemistry w/lab. Had anyone else ever had problems with this and Ccac advisors not being educated on what needs done? Because of this mistake, on their part, I won't be eligible until spring 2015. Classes filled for chem in fall and apps for 2014 fall need to be in by march. If I took chem jan 2014, it wouldn't be finished in time.
Thanks in advance
Confused and upset!
I nearly ran into the same problem with my math requirement. I took my chem thru NursingABC.com it took me a week to complete it. I'm not sure how busy your life is but you could possibly complete it prior to the 15th.

Hi Guspup13,
I have met with two different academic advisors at allegheny campus to discuss nursing program admissions and what I need to do and they have been less than helpful. It totally sucks about the chem requirement. Definitely look into Carbon86's suggestion or maybe see if you can take the chem at a different campus. Also, check next week for openings since people will probably drop out the closer it gets to classes starting. May I ask how you got a meeting with the nursing coordinator? Was it for the allegheny campus? Feel free to PM me. Thanks!
Steelersgirl86...
I have been corresponding with her through email but she is very slow to reply. She received my application the 2nd week of July. I received an email saying they got it and I need to sign a "receipt" stating i got the confirmation. I followed up, being the neurotic I am, because I don't want my mistake causing me entrance into the program. She would never respond to the emails or calls so i just showed up to the office and talked to her personally. I have all my classes...then she sprung that chemistry on me. I got in contact with my high school guidance counselor to verify my chemistry had a lab. She was quick with a response and even contacted Ccac. However, I followed up with Ccac and got
No answer. My chemistry (chemistry in the classroom) had lab work but it wasn't the advanced chem. it is just really annoying them not responded!!! Aug 15 is the deadline for apps and I would like to know if i should sign up for chemistry for fall semester! Or take a whole new route and go to upmc nursing or so on...
Abc nursing would have been a good choice but I highly doubt I'd be able to complete it in a week!
Bummed! I better get an answer tomorrow or I'm going back or writing the dean!!
Thanks ladies!!
