CC to university transfer question

Published

Hello everyone I have a question that I haven't been able to get a straight answer from counselors at my CC. If I finish all of the prerequisites and GE at my CC and transfer to a university to get a BSN, how long will it take? I have heard 4 years from some and 2 years from others (not counting years spent at the CC just at the university). Would it be 2 years at the university once you transfer then you get your BSN or do you still have to do 4 years at the university? Thank you.

If you are going directly into the university nursing program and have finished all prereqs/general ed as required by the specific university, it should take only 2 more years at the university.

Thank you so much there has been so much confusion for me about this. I'm going to apply to my CC's ADN-BSN collaborative program, some other CC's ADN programs, and to CSU's just in case to cover all bases lol. I'm pretty sure I'm on track to finish all the correct transferable prereqs and GEs. I'm going to try meeting with a counselor again to make sure the classes I'm on track to finish meet the transfer requirements. One of the schools I want to apply to transfer to is CSU Los Angeles. If I can transfer into a BSN program I much rather do that then spend an extra 2 years going through a CC.

Yes, there are 4 semesters of nursing in both BSN and ADN, so if you are able it makes sense to go directly for the BSN. Doing an ADN is usually driven by family, economics, proximity, etc.

I am not sure if your CC is the same as the one I attended but the way it worked for me is I took all the pre-nursing classes and graduated with my associates then transferred into the 4 year BSN program. My CC had a partnership with the University to make sure all my credits transferred. Once accepted into the program it is 5 consecutive semesters and then you're done. My program is nights/weekends so it may take a little longer than the traditional route.

Depends on the CSU or college with the BSN. Some colleges have 3 year program while others only 2 years (fast paced). You might need to research the program to be sure. ADN in CC usually have two years. If you fail some classes and they haven't kicked you out yet, obviously that's gonna add more years to your education. I got accepted into CSU Sacramento and they seem to have an awesome 2 year program! Good luck~

Look into the specific college you wish to transfer to since it can range from 4-6 semesters. For example, SFSU 2 years, SJSU 3 years. It will all depend on the school. It shouldn't take you 4 years at the university, but never say never! If there are specific prereques needed at the university it could take you 4 years theoretically (ex. USF has 2 pre-nursing courses before starting their 3 year program). Good luck!
