Career suicide?

Does anyone feel it would be career suicide to take a DON or administrator position for a 1-2 star facility? I a currently a nurse manager for a sub-acute rehab unit at a 5-star rated facility. I know my fellow colleagues would never even consider going from a 5 star to a 1 star but I don't know how else to get experience as a DON or an administrator. I have been groomed to be an administrator for a few years at my facility but it may be many more years before this occurs (though you never know). In the meantime as I complete my MBA and MHA I fear I will become complacent if I stay in my current position. Any thoughts?

Just think how good it will look in your résumé if you can say that you came into a one star facility and within 2years you have brought it up to a 4 or 5 star facility :-)

I have to agree with iceprincess. For one thing, those star ratings are really ridiculous. But....getting there as a 1 star and raising the star bar to 4 or 5...sure looks good. I've done it a few times and it's great. You go to a place that's had an horrific survey...work your butt off till the next survey. Get a great survey.....that's what'll get you hired again and again.

I agree with the others and if you are currently in a 5 star facility then you must be familiar with the "right" ways of doing things. This could offer you an advantage when it comes down to bringing a 1/2 star building back up. I say go for it!
