Career Change into Nursing from Business

Published

Hi All!

I am currently working in Corporate Finance and have seriously been considering a career change to nursing. I am very certain that the nursing profession is the career for me but would like to hear some other peoples experiences who have made a career change like this. I find my career in Finance to be pretty mundane and meaningless and at the end of the day I really would pride myself to be able to be in a career where I can help others. I am still currently in my position in Finance but am toying with the idea of starting one or two pre-reqs for a BSN accelerate program if my schedule allows. I have also considered leaving my job all together to focus on pre-reqs and finding a job in the medical field part time to help pay for bills. Overall, I would really like to hear anyones advice whether they have been through something similar or if they have any insight on what the process of taking pre-reqs and applying to nursing school entails and how long it took.

I look forward to connecting with aspiring and current nurses.

Thanks!

What kind of research have you done that convinced you that nursing is the career for you? If you have no first-hand experience in healthcare, I would strongly encourage you to get some before making a big career change. A CNA (certified nursing assistant) position is the quickest and cheapest way to get a clinical job in healthcare and would give you some exposure to what nurses do and what being in nursing entails.

Best wishes for your journey!

ETA: Forgot to say welcome to allnurses! :balloons:

I also changed careers from business to nursing. I agree with elkpark on completing a CNA course to see if nursing is truly for you - that is exactly what I did. Do that first and if you are ok with the CNA work, then start taking nursing prereqs.

I had the luxury of taking prereqs full time and then an ABSN and then an MSN, thanks to savings and to generous scholarships and some loans. It is hard to transition back to being a student, but certainly possible. The hardest thing for me was no longer being an expert (I had 20 years business experience) and suddenly knowing nothing. But, I survived and am happy with my choice.

Good luck
