Do you mean ICU/CCU or step-down/med surg NP?

The CV NPs in our ICU/CCU assist in surgery, round on pts, see pts in outpatient CV surgery clinic, etc. There are both PAs & NPs on our unit, but we have more NPs than PAs. The NPs in this role are usually ACNPs and have had quite a few years' experience as a critical care RN before becoming an NP. They typically do a 7 days on/7 days off schedule. Which means they are either in the hospital all night for those 7 days (they have sleeping quarters & use the doctor's lounge) or they are at home on-call at night if the pts are mostly stable. The plus side of 7 on/7 off is when you take a week vacation, it ends up being 3 weeks off. The downside is 7 days in a row. I can't speak to compensation. They work for the CV surgery specialists. Our hospitalist/intensivist NPs in step-down/med surg are covered by the hospital's nurses union contract. They are a mix of ACNPs & FNPs. However, the trend is now to hire ACNPs for inpatient NPs. They can opt for 7 on/7 off or do shift work (e.g. 0600-1800). Compensation is based on years of experience.

Every hospital is going to be different. YMMV :)

I see this is an old post,...but,...I am an NP working in a Cardiology / Electrophysiology Practice. I see patients in the office M-F, I do rounds in the hospital two days a week, I am on call and do rounds every other weekend. My days in the office are spent seeing patients, interrogating devices, etc. I do not work in the cath lab. I'm usually out of the office by 5-5:30, my day starts at 0830. I am salaried, and though I make above the avg NP salary for my area, I would make much more as an hourly employee!! I absolutely love my job and wish I had made the change sooner!

Thanks for the current update. I did heart failure care for about six months recently. We saw pts in the hospital and then followed them in our NP-run clinic. The hospital was also re-developing a heart transplant and adult ECMO unit too.

@BrnEyedGirl That's awesome to hear. I know this is an old post but I was wondering, are you ACNP? FNP? What was your path to get there if you don't mind me asking? I am interested in cardiology but most of the information I see is about CCU-type roles but I am more interested in what you appear to be doing!
