I live in the bay area, I applied to community colleges and universities and did not get accepted into any of them nor did 5 of my classmates despite my 4.0 GPA:crying2:. I have been told that it is very competitive and they turn away thousands of qualified student every year. There is not enough nurse educators because financially it doesnt make since for them to quit working at the hopital to come and teach for a lower wage. I have also been told by a rep at SFSU that they do not have enough room to accomadate all the students. They received 1200 applicants but only accepted 82. I quit my job and moved back home so I could go to school full-time. Now that I didnt get accepted into the program it is going to set me back a whole year! And I was also told that it could happen again. I really want to be a nurse but I have to be realistic as I am the divorcee with a 5 year old. I need to get back to work. So I am transferring to my local university under Health Administration (management). I've been doing some research and I hear this is happening all across the board. There is supposed to be a nursing shortage but many qualified students are being turned away. It seems like the govt would step in and help these schools pay more to nurse educators. I think we are going to lose lots of students that would make excellent nurses due to this problem. Anybody else having problems getting into a nursing program?

That is not the govt's job.
Why not they are helping everybody else?...housing, banks, other countries. Why not help pay educators more money? They provide the best of services but get less pay. In the end the government will pay for this nursing shortage...they can pay now or pay later the choice is theirs.

Hello mscjackson35,
I am in the Bay Area as well and it is absolutely ridiculous how fierce the competition is. Although I am surprised, you did not get in with a 4.0 gpa. I know that SFSU has some requirements of volunteer work or work with cultural groups. CSUEB also looks at the TEAS test results, but you can take it multiple times. I know last year the average GPA was 3.8 and the TEAS test average was mid 90's.
Also there are several ADN programs, but they are all impacted as well, and you end up at the whim of a lottery system. I am so sorry that you didn't get in.
Bottomline a lot of people who would make fantastic nurses, get turned away. At my school, there are teachers that received their higher degrees fully paid so that they would go into teaching. So there are more programs starting to come about to encourage more nurses towards teaching, but I agree there needs to be more and the government should get involved.
Best regards,
Jean

hi
i moved from the bay area to virginia. (what a move huh?!) n e way, i have been applying to get in for the past 5 years... i ve been rejected every time. i got into one university, but my parents refused to let me go.. and now we both regret that decision. i have to repeat most of my prerequisites as most schools only accept classes taken within the last 5 years. im so devastated. i dont know what to do...i have spent so much money applying every year.. to universities and community colleges. lots of money...maybe about 1500 dollars already..

mscjackson35,
I can't believe that you and 5 of your classmates did not get accepted anywhere despite your 4.0 averages. I know that getting into nursing school is difficult, but that is insane.
I will be applying to entry level MSN and ABSN programs next year, mostly around the Bay Area. I am already stressing because I received B's in Anatomy and Microbiology. I have A's in everything else, but as competitive as it is, I feel that those two B's have already destroyed my chances. This is unreal.
