hi guys,
i have a serious dilemma and hoping that someone can give me some advice as to what to do.
after much searching, applying and receiving rejection letters from various nursing programs, i have finally found one that accepted me-but it's out of state.
that's not so much the bad part. me and my husband are both unemployed. we pretty much lost our jobs within weeks of each other during the economic downturn. to make matters worst, the next week after getting laid off, i found out i was pregnant. we both desperately searched for work but with the economy and high unemployment rate, we were unsuccessful.
we've decided to use our misfortune to our advantage and enroll in school. i decided to make the sacrifice and relocate to go to nursing school because i know in the end it would be worth it. thankfully, i received a wonderful financial aid package between grants and loans and should be okay to maintain my living expenses without having to work until after i have the baby. my husband is ex-military so his schooling costs are covered by his gi bill-which doesn't extend to me.
my dilemma is the cost associated with me relocating to the school. i was not eligible for unemployment benefits so i lived off my savings and cashed out my 401k to maintain myself and children. now school starts in a few weeks and i don't have a penny to secure an apartment off campus or purchase a plane ticket. i really tried hard to find a job over the summer because i knew this could be a problem but being pregnant definitely didn't help.
now i'm finally scheduled to start school this fall and don't have the funds to get there. i wrote a letter to the pastor of my church hoping they could help, but i'm yet to hear from them. i really don't want this opportunity to pass me by.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
I say GO for it!!! Nursing school will definately be a challenge, but is well worth it!! I am a mother of 5 kids, one of whom who has special needs and I am a full time nursing student. It hasn't. been easy because I sacrifice doing things with my kids and spending time with them. I told them that things would be a little tight until I finished school.
Definately, go for ANY loans that you are eligible for. Don't worry about the amount of loans that you are racking up because when you become the RN some employers offer loan forgiveness. I pray that things will work out for you.
Good luck to you. My only thought is how can you afford NOT to take this opportunity to complete your ADN???
If you don't go, next year, or the next won't be any better....
Next year at this time you can be on the road to financial recovery by completing your ADN and passing the NCLEX-RN and beginning a wonderful career. Or, you can do nothing, and have nothing. Best of luck to you and your growing family!!!

I agree LightingBug, I can not let this opportunity pass me by. I'm happy to report some good news. My cousin has agreed to help me out and give me the cash to secure an apartment. The next hurdle is to secure the cash to have my car shipped. Because I'm almost six months pregnant, I don't want to drive the 14+ hours it will take to get there.
Hopefully, I will be able to start this fall. Thank you guys for all your support.

After reading your second post, I say go for it. And congrats on your pregnancy. I have two little girls, so I know it has to be hard to leave your children behind. But we have to do what is best for our family. Have you tried private student loans? These are thru companys like Sallie Mae, NelNet, and others who hold our school loans. They'll run a credit check and you may have to get a co-signer. Call them. I know Sallie Mae took my info over the phone. Also, see if a bank will loan you money for school. Most banks give loans for school with proof of course. Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress.
