(Canadian) US RN License Endorsement to California

Published

Looking at other options this year, I wanted to endorse my Maine RN license to California. Working in the US for 1 year now proved promising. Being said that, the process will probably painstaking/hard since I am internationally educated (in Canada) and  Cali is not a compact State, but I am open to challenges. Regardless of the result, at least I tried.

* I started this thread so I can update every steps.

Feb 2021 - Paid endorsement application fee ($799) with fingerprinting fee.

My roommate's requirements were out to him in March even though he paid early February. I think it really depends on your last name and the analyst. Live scan makes a difference as well since the manual fingerprinting takes time to process.

Update: Sept. 2021 - I got deficiency letter for Obstetrics and Pediatrics from the BRN. I will have 3 years to complete them.

Hi, @hypnotizer90! I know this post is 2 years old but I'm in the same situation right now as you were 2 years ago. I applied for my RN license with the CA BRN and received my deficiency letter in May of 2023. There were 7 deficiencies including Pediatrics, Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology lab components, Social Sciences and Oral and Written Communications. It doesn't make sense to me why I need to retake the Sciences that I've already taken but I'm sorring that out right now. My main concern is the Pediatrics. Did you successfully complete the Pediatrics and if you did, may I ask where you took it from? Thanks!

Hi. I withheld continuing my application to Cali BRN just because I didn't have the money before, around <5-10k per class (theory&clinical) in College vs. University vs. Private. The schools were on waiting list (1-2years waitlisted & varies). Most schools didn't offer Obstetrics & Pediatrics in one semester so I would need 2 semesters (1year in Cali) in different schools. I could have done travel nursing with TN1 status but I barely started in ICU & I didn't want to resume MedSurg. My initial plan was to endorse RN license to either Arizona/Nevada/Oregon & commute to the nearest Cali school.

I asked the BRN if I could take the classes out of state but they only approved nursing programs in California and they couldn't guarantee they would accept out of state. Noteworthy that the BRN are probably stricter now because of the Operation Nightingale in Florida w the nursing school scandals. Nevertheless, I tried to inquire at my home State and they didn't offer standalone courses that I should be back to zero & start all over again despite being RN (smh).

I'll re-assess once I get my PR.

Cali Schools Offering Deficiency Courses from my research:

Loma Linda University

Dominican University

Stanislaus State

Evergreen Valley College

California State University Campuses e.g. Chico San Bernardino

Unitek College

Los Angeles Pierce College

College of the Desert

Hi, thank you so much for your response and the resources. One of the schools I called offered Pediatrics with OB and I couldn't just take Peds. I've been doing some research while I wait for the response of my evaluator and my case manager from the agency, but I haven't found anything that says I can take classes under the TN Visa. Did you come across anything relating to the visa required to take classes as a foreign nurse while you were doing your own research?

Yes, while your're employed under TN status, you are allowed to take classes without the need for another visa. However, the employment is the primary purpose rather than school.

Thank you so much for being so helpful! I've got some good info from your responses that I can discuss with my case manager and immigration lawyer. I'm still waiting for a response from my BRN evaluator. Thanks again!
