Canadian RN applying for TN visa

Published

Anyone from Canada recently apply for a TN visa? I will be applying for the first time at a Canadian-US Port of Entry and am having a difficult time finding a concrete list of required documents I will need to present. Some websites say I will need a visa screen/GCFNS certification, as well as a nursing license for the state I will be practicing in, while others do not mention these at all. To confuse matters even more, some also mention a credentials evaluation. Is this the same as a visa screen? When I looked on the GCFNS website they seem to be different, but it would be so expensive to pay for both!

If my employer filed an I-129 petition form, would I still need to pay for these assessments?

I would so greatly appreciate any feedback from those of you who have recently and successfully gotten their TN visa! Thank you!

Hey got my TN last week

I brought :

-My TN letter (bring an original they'll keep it and they'll give you a copy)

-Visascreen

-CES report (clic on it and print your applicant copy)

-my degree (original)

-50$ US

I also had : an original transcript, a copy of my US license and a copy of my Quebec License. He didn't care much for those.

**Your credential evaluation (CES report) is part of your Visascreen. So I paid for my CES report first in order to get my US license and after applied and paid for the Visascreen. You should read some post in the registration forum also to gather more information.

Good luck on your journey:)

Thank you so much for your input! I assume the TN letter is the letter from my employer?

Ok, So you applied for your U.S. license first then? I was under the impression that you had to have your visa first before you could apply for licensure, but it sounds like you applied while still in Canada? How long did that take? I am worried about making my US employer wait too long.

I'm also confused because when I called the National Visa Center in the US about the documents required for the TN visa, the representative said she had never heard of a visa screen. She did however say that I would need a DS-260 form.

To have your Visascreen you'll need

1-CES report

2-Proof of NCLEX

3-One active License

Most employers won't even call you back if you don't have an active US license.

You don't need any forms except your document for your TN status

Getting a license has nothing to do with your visa (immigration).

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Visa Screen Certificate will only be released once they have confirmation from state you have meet requirements to be a RN. Ideally you need to check out state requirements and start process now

hey, which states did u get an employer? im currently processing my visa scree. Is your employer strict regarding recent hospitl experience? its good to know though..

They asked 1 year of med surg in the past 5 years

Hi. I am a nurse from the Philippines and I migrated here in Quebec 2 years ago. I'm done with the IEN program but soon to take the OIIQ exam. (no french knowledge yet). I also have a valid nursing license in Illinois with visascreen..

Is it better to just wait for citizenship and apply TN visa in Illinois? than continue processing my nursing license here in Quebec? Could you give insights regarding opportunities here in Quebec? Thanks.

Hi,

I am a nurse from Philippines and Im currently residing here in Quebec. I'm about to take my OIIQ examination next yr but I'm confused whether to pursue it as I haven't started studying French. I have an active Illinois license with visascreen so I am wondering if it's easy to obtain a TN visa in Illinois? And is it worth it to still pursue the Quebec RN license in terms of job opportunities here? I can aplly for citizenahip by May 2018.

Hope you could give your insights. Thanks.

Hey I went to nursing school in Qc and I speak French so unfortunately I don't have any experience with the French exam. There's a lot of job opportunities in Qc,there's a shortage.but you have to be able to speak a little bit of French even in the West Island of Mtl. You'll have to dig into the forum and search what are your possibilities if you fail your French exam.

Getting a job on in IL is doable if you have the right experience. I'm not gonna lie it's Not easy, but I managed to find one.

Since you're not even eligible for citizenship then the TN is not an option for now. You will have to get your citizenship and apply for your passport. Do you have a valid US SSN? How will you keep your IL license active?

Sorry I can't really help you as we don't have the same credentials/experience.

Good luck on your journey :)

Thanks for your reply.. I don't have SSN yet but my illinois license can be renewed by taking nursing units every time its about to expire, that's why it remains active... I can apply citizenship May 2018 while I can take OIIQ exam by March 2018 then I have to study french for 1-2 years before I can become competent to take the French exam. In short, obtaining citizenship and TN visa would probably be the faster route for me since it would take me another 2-3 yrs here in Qc to get a permanent license... So, I'm having a dilemma whether to still pursue the OIIQ and french here knowing that my citizenship will come first... Does obtaining TN visa for Nursing homes/hospitals in Illinois require current nursing experience? Or its possible to obtain a visa even without exp?

Thanks.
