Canadian nurse planning to move to Cali

U.S.A. California

Published

Hey everyone,

I have been an ICU nurse in a big teaching hospital in Toronto for 2 years and one year of nursing resource (various med-sug units) experience before that. Because my husband has newly landed a decent job in San Diego, I'm planning to move there with him. From what I have been reading from the various threads, I understand that it is really hard to land a nursing job in Cali but I still want to give it a try. I do not want to move there before landing a job.

My question is: do recruiters prefer candidates with a CA address on the resume? If I put my husband's address on the resume but a Canadian phone number to call, does that make sense? And wouldn't they know that I am still working in Toronto by looking at my resume? Or do the recruiters solely prefer that I already have a place to live in Cali?

Have you sorted out a CA nursing license and a work visa yet? that would be your first step.

I agree with the previous poster. The process of attaining legal eligibility to work in California will be lengthy (I'm referring to years, not months). Click on the website link below to read about the hoops you may have to jump to obtain a California RN license.

To apply to CA BRN you need a US SSN and you can't get that until in the US with a valid visa allowing you to live and work in the US
