Canadian LPN 10+ years experience moving to NY state

Hi! So I've been an LPN in Canada for over 10 years now and my scope is fairly advanced here compared to LPN scope in NY state, which kind of sucks. Given my program was 2 years, I was hoping I could potentially be evaluated for an RN license.  I know I need to submit my education to be evaluated, but does anyone know if CGFNS looks into continuing ED, on site education/training and your scope? or does the board of nursing do this as well? I'd hate to not be able to work to my full scope, but it is what it is!

Also, does anyone know the processing times for CGFNS?

Thanks!

Double check, thats what I found with a quick Google search.

"In order to make the transition from LPN to RN, LPNs generally complete an accredited registered nurse program and take the national exam for RN licensure known as the NCLEX-RN. In some cases, however, LPNs are able to waive a portion of the RN program because of their experience. Mine took 3mos in 2019 just because of delay from my 3schools. But it really depends how fast all the requirements are received. I did the Ontario RPN-1yrBridging-2yrBScN and needed to submit forms from 3 different schools. Kinda redundant since whatever I submitted to CGFNS was submitted to ME Board as well.

If I only did the RPN and just the 1yrBridging then I would submit both so they could assess what I'm lacking towards getting my US RN license or degree. There is also a growing question whether Canadian LPN/RPN is equivalent to Associate RN Degree in the US. When I was hired, the recruiters considered my RPN as Associate RN experience.

Were you planning to do both the CGFNS Visa Screen and the CGFNS CVS for NY State?

I’m actually a U.S. citizen so the visa screen I won’t need.

you’re right. I find that most programs for LPN in the states are fairly short. In Alberta it was 2 years plus clinicals of course. Alberta LPN scope is practically the equivalent of RN nowadays. I was really hoping that I could be considered an associate degree RN. I was told I had to apply for both. That if I sent in my credentials to be evaluated for RN, they could deny it saying it’s not equivalent and I have to send it in for LPN now. I have over 10 years experience so I’d really hate to have to minimize my skills. :/

Your Canadian nursing education was as a practical nurse, therefore does not meet NY education requirements below.

License Requirements: Registered Professional Nursing

§6905. Requirements for a license as a registered professional nurse.

*Education: have received an education, and a diploma or degree in professional nursing, in accordance with the commissioner's regulations;
* NB Effective until June 18, 2019

*Education: have received an education, and a diploma or degree in professional nursing, in accordance with the commissioner's regulations, and in order to continue to maintain registration as a registered professional nurse in New York state, have attained a baccalaureate degree or higher in nursing within ten years of initial licensure in accordance with the commissioner's regulations. The department, in its discretion, may issue a conditional registration to a licensee who fails to complete the baccalaureate degree but who agrees to meet the additional requirement within one year.

Best wishes in obtaining LPN license then consider additional education to achieve professional nursing degree.  It can be done as many members here can attest.

It was a practical nurse program, but I received a 2 year nursing diploma, not a certificate. And everything listed there under RN scope, I can do as an LPN here and have received the additional training. It’s unfortunate.
