Canadian lpn as rn in the states

Published

I am an lpn student graduating in few months in Alberta. I was told that I can become an ADN in the states with that my lpn diploma. I took two years of the RN program in Ontario but because of family emergency couldn't continue so I decided to just take the lpn and slowly upgrade. So with all this education am I eligible to become an adn in georgia state? Ps that is where I want to move.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Each state nursing board is run very differently. Your best bet is to call the BON directly. Nursing - Contact the Georgia Board of Nursing

I'm very confused. I tried speaking to the Georgia bon but they were not very informative at all. I'm very confused and really need some clarity. What are the steps in getting a license in georgia. Where cab I send my transcript to see if I'm qualified as an adn

Unfortunately, whether or not the person you spoke with was informative, the only authority for answering your questions is the Georgia BON. Some BONs are likewise a customer service line, and unfortunately you may have to call multiple times to get someone who can help you.

Well, I don't think you can become an RN without going through an approved program and graduating. I don't think you would be considered an ADN since that is a specific degree meaning you would have to an associate degree. A diploma is viewed as a diploma in most cases. Even with an ADN, you would still not be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN. You would not be eligible for the RN to BSN programs because those require a license.

We have BSNs and ADNs in the states who are not RNs because they never passed the NCLEX or they never bothered to get licensed.

GA like many states requires you to graduate from an RN program whether ADN, BSN or diploma. Once you graduate and earn your Canadian LPN license you can apply to the GABoN for a LPN license by examination as an internationally educated nurse. However you will not be eligible for any work visa including TN as LPN is not on the list. You may have difficulty even finding employment as there is not a high vacancy rate and an employer would be hard pressed to prove they cannot hire a citizen or permanent resident.

Do you have a US SSN (only citizens, legal permanent residents, and certain work visas are entitled to SSN)? Do you already have work rights or do you need sponsorship? If you need visa sponsorship LPN is not eligible.

There is a past thread by a PN who became licensed as a RN in Texas, you can find the thread by using the search tool in the top hand corner, the title of the thread is 'RPN working in the US as RN, it's true!'
