Mohawk College RPN Class Timetable?

Hi there! Would any former or current Mohawk students be willing to share their semester 1 timetables with me? I'm starting in January and trying to determine my childcare needs. Thanks!

My schedule:

Mon: 8:30 - 10:30, 3:30 - 5:30

Tues: 8:30 - 11:30, 2:30 - 4:30

Wed: 8:30 - 12:30 lab

Thurs: Clinical 7 - 1

Fri: Off (not complaining about that one!) Everyone has 1 week day off per week

I'm in semester 4, so I will give you what I had all 4 semesters

Semester 1:

Monday: Health and Healing 8:30-10:30 and Health Sciences 3:30-5:30

Tuesdays: Computers in Nursing 8:30-11:30 (but it never went that long), and Professional Development 2:30-4:30

Wednesdays: Lab 8:30-12:30

Thursdays Off

Friday Clinical 7-1

Semester 2:

Monday: Psychology 12:30-2:30 and Health and Healing 2:30-4:30

Tuesdays Off

Wednesday: Health Sciences 9:30-11:30

Thursdays: Lab 12:30-2:30

Fridays: Clinical 7am-7pm

Semester 3:

Monday: Sociology 12:30-2:30 and Health Sciences 2:30-4:30

Tuesday: Health and Healing 8:30-10:30 and Lab 2:30-4:30

Wednesdays Off

Thursdays Off

Fridays: Clinical 7-7

Semester 4:

For the first 7 weeks

Wednesdays: Health and Healing 9:30-11:30, Professional Development 12:30-2:30

Thursdays: Lab 4:30-6:30

You had the rest off the week off to do your service learning hours

For the 2nd 7 weeks you are at your pre grad placement full time with a preceptor

Hello,

I will be starting the RPN program at Mohawk in January and i just have a few questions about it. If you happen to know anything that could help, please leave me a comment! I would really appreciate your feedback.

In terms of timetable... how does it work? Do we choose from a few already pre-set timetables, or do we make our own? Does it just get assigned to us? And can we request what days to have off, or what days to have clinical? And where do most clinical sessions happen? How do students get to clinical if they don't have a car, is carpool common?

I know this is a lot at once, I'm sorry ahaha, I am just trying to figure everything out as I have a full year health science course from Sept. 2017 - April 2018 to complete for my degree... and it overlaps with the nursing program. I feel highly capable of handling it, but it is just a matter of figuring everything out for my travels from city to city.

Hi Amy,

I am a current Mohawk RPN student.

- Your timetable is already pre-set but you usually have two different blocks to pick from. You unfortunately cannot request certain days off. In semester 1 you do not have a clinical placement.

- In semester 2 and 3, you pick your placement days according to your timetable. For example, Block A has your clinical day (7am-7pm) either Tuesday or Wednesday and Block B has your clinical day either Thursday or Friday. The day you do not have clinical, you would have off. You can essentially select which day you want your clinical on when you pick your top 5 requests for placement out of the options they provide you. So for me, I knew I wanted Tuesdays for clinical and Wednesdays off, so I only selected the placements/location that were offered on Tuesdays.

- You have a bus pass included in your tuition. Most people take the bus or carpool. You do not get special treatment if you do not have a car or if the hospital is not accessible by bus. You just need to figure that out. There are usually a lot of Hamilton options and a few that are outside of Hamilton.

- Semester 4 is when you have your first 7 weeks in class, and the last 7 weeks working 40 hours per week at your pre-grad placement and you follow a nurses schedule. It could be weekends, days or overnights.

How difficult is the program? I am currently finishing up my degree in health sciences at university and just wondering if it will be around the same stress/commitment level.

The text books are offered in either an online bundle or in paperback form. It is much cheaper to get the bundle, however, it only lasts for 7 years. Plus the text books are huge! The first bundle is around $500 and the second bundle was around $300 but then you use the same textbooks for all semesters. I did not purchase extra books (i.e. psych or sociology) as I found the online material provided by the profs were helpful enough.

The program can be very heavy at times. It is definitely manageable if you are able to prioritize your time. The hardest thing to get over is "blended learning" because you teach/read a lot of the material yourself prior to class, and then it is briefly discussed in class with group work or case studies.
