Can we talk about something other than NCLEX?

Hey all new grad nurses! i know this is a really stressful time in all of our lives, but PLEASE, in order to preserve my sanity, can we try to discuss something other than NCLEX on some of the threads on here??

I am so frustrated right now. I still have not received my ATT, so maybe I am a little jealous of all the new grads who are ready to test. Maybe I'm just sick of the wait. But all this NCLEX stuff sure does seem irritating!

So, in order to fulfill my own request, let's talk about JOBS!!

How is everyone's first job as a GN/new RN going??

I start Feb. 9 if I decide to go with the position I have been offered in NICU. What about you guys??

I had my interveiw today and got offered the job on the spot! I told her I needed to think about it only so I don't look too desperate! It is the job I wanted and I am so excited. I will let you all know how it goes once I start! L&D here I come!

So for those of you who were offered jobs (nekhismom, rpbear...) can you provide us with what you think your TOP 3 things to do or NOT to do in an interview are?!?!?!

I guess I could just start another thread...

I think it is important to show up looking professional. To me this means nice dress or business suit. I have heard some say not to wear really high heels, but since that is all I own in the way of dress shoes, I wore high heels to all of my interviews. Also, carry an executive folder (like a binder, only nicer. They have a legal pad and pen inside, and usually a calculator and a couple of folders to put papers in). Bring extra copies of your resume.

Secondly, be prepared and knowledgable! You should have a list of questions that you would like to ask the interviewers on hand. Just don't ask more than 12 questions during the interview. You should also make it a point to know a little bit about the hospital and the unit you are applying for.

Thirdly, be honest during your interview and just be yourself. Remember to smile and show passion for the job if you are truly interested. Keep your head up and look the interviewer in the eyes when speaking. You would be surprised at how many people who do not do this!! And remember that you are essentially selling yourself to this interviewer, so always put your best effort forward. Even if you don't really want the position, showing enthusiasm never hurts and is good practice. Oh, and try not to babble when asked questions. Sometimes this may be really hard, but try to limit it. I did this in one interview and was so sure I had not gotten the position because of that. I felt horrible.

Whatever you do, best of luck. Oh, and if you are a May grad, start applying NOW!!! Specialty areas fill up fast, so you want to make sure you get a spot that you want. And apply at different hospitals, etc, if there are any in your area. You'd be surprised at the differences in pay, the way nurses are treated, benefits, etc. from facility to facility even within the same small town.

I agree with everything that nikhismom said. I only went on one face to face nursing interview, (some pre-interviews via phone) but I guess I did something right. ;) I have been on many job interviews in my life and some of them went very well and other were disasters. This one was different, I got the impression that she was trying to sell herself and the unit, not the other way arround. It was very casual and she did't ask any strange questions. A friend of mine said that they (the nurse managers) know that you are getting many offers from many different areas and if they like you and think you are a great fit they want to grab you up before you take another offer. Don't know if this is true, but it sure boosted my self confidence! :D

like rpbear, i was told that recruiters know you are getting other offers and if managers like you, they want to scoop you up quick!
