Can Spinal Taps cause bumps or tumors?

Published

My new roomate was asking me a question about a spinal tap she had done about 2 years ago because I'm a nursing student. She got the spinal tap because she was losing vision in her left eye. After the spinal tap, another specialist told her it was her birth control, so she stopped taking it and her vision came back.

As for the spinal tap, after two years she still has back pain and can't lift more than 30ish pounds, so she can't work outside and do things like landscaping. She can't sit in a fixed position for more than ten minutes without them hurting and she wakes up in pain multiple times a night. There are bumps that almost feel like a cyst or a tumor right where the tap was done, and I don't know how to explain this to her...

Any information would help, Thank you!

Has she spoken to her doctor about it?

This is going to happen to you many times in your career. Due to concerns about legal liability, many nurses (and students) choose not to answer questions like these. A wrong answer could open you up for a lawsuit.

We have a similar policy on AllNurses not to answer questions that could be construed as asking for medical advice. I empathize with your roommate but this is a question she needs to ask of her primary health care provider. If she can't get to her primary provider and is still having issues, strongly urge her to seek help at student health services. I commend you for being a good friend and for caring, but it's best that you learn now how to say "no" when someone asks you for medical advice.

Closing this now. Again I am very sorry that your friend is having these problems and hope she finds some resolution soon.
