Can Someone Help - Psychiatric Technician Student

Published

I am a psychiatric nursing student and I will graduate in four months I wanted to know if anyone has taken the nclex and any tips you could give me to pass the first time

what to study that would be nice

actually I would like to know the set of the test like kind of what it looks like

As a licensed psychiatric technician, I can tell you that you are not correct. In the state of California, licensed vocational nurses and psychiatric technicians are parallel professions. We belong to the same board (BVNPT), our training is almost solely focused in psychiatric facilities. However, we can work in hospitals, schools, prisons, group homes, and other facilities where there are individuals with developmental disabilities or those with psychiatric diagnoses. We provide the same nursing care that an LVN or LPN can provide, it is completely within our scope. However, our training has little focus on pediatric or obstetric care (which LVN's and LPN's do). We are a nursing profession and to my knowledge, we do not possess the word "nurse" in our title because we cannot be called a psychiatric nurse BECAUSE a psychiatric nurse is usually a RN with advanced specialty training in psychiatry. We are also allowed to bridge into RN programs. It would not be wrong of us to refer to ourselves as nurses. Our own instructors who possessed BSN's or MSN's informed us on many occasions and corrected people when there was a doubt if we were really nurses.

To answer the question of the first person who posted...

Although we are told to study the NCLEX, I only studied the NCLEX sparingly and found that the most effective way to study is to focus on nursing fundamentals, med-surg, and pharmacology (focus on psychotropic meds). For the psychiatric portion of the exam you will need to go back and read your DSM-V for information on personality disorders, intellectual disabilities, schizophrenia etc. I remember a lot of situational questions pertaining to working with patients who have BPD.

I passed my boards in November! PM me!

I know I’m digging up a 4 year old thread but I just took my PT boards on sat i feel as if I bombed it

do you know of a way of finding out the results quicker than the two week wait they told me ? Thanks

Check breeze. I think its breeze.ca.gov ? Look up your name. Some might say it doesn't work. Some might say it does.
Best of luck! If you passed, great!!!! If you didn’t, not a big deal. You know what to expect, study some more and take it again!!! And start applying everywhere!

I’m not sure, but this is the only way I can think of. I know it’s nerve wracking, but you gotta wait... sorry
